Entry
After losing his sister seven years ago, Kakeru Satsuki led a vacant life, only able to return to his normal days with help from his childhood friend Yuka Minase and other friends at school.
Suddenly one day the sky turns red and the moon turns black. Everyone around Kakeru and Yuka disappear and monsters start roaming the streets. They are only able to run away and hide and after a while, the world returns to normal. But just when they thought this world was a dream, the Red Night occurs again.
Kakeru and Yuka manage to find four other humans involved in this mysterious phenomenon: Misuzu Kusakabe, a red-haired onmyouji swordswoman, Kukuri Tachibana, a strange mute girl who looks like Kakeru’s deceased sister, Yukiko Hirohara, a lively young girl who reverts to the personality of a cold killer when her glasses are removed, and Takahisa Tajima, a young pyrokineticist with a heated attitude to boot.
They get together and try to survive, but six shadows suddenly appear in front of them….
These six shadows call themselves the Black Knights, and for an unknown reason wish to kill Kakeru and friends. The teenagers wind up coming across a girl with flowing silver hair wearing a white dress, trapped in a red crystal. Her name is Lisette. She claims that she is being held captive and asks for their help. The Black Knights prevent them from doing anything and begin referring to Kakeru’s friends as fragments and to Kakeru as “the bearer of the Eye of Aeon”. As they go on trying to survive, the six teenagers gradually form bonds and begin to work together in order to defeat the Black Knights, in the hopes that this will end the Red Night (phenomenon) once and for all.
Along the way, Kakeru receives a strange note saying “You are the reason the demon has awakened.” This note and “the demon” does not come up again until much later in the series.
They manage to defeat four of the six Black Knights, while revealing their pasts.
Takahisa was abandoned by his parents because of his abilities as a pyrokineticist, and the school nurse Saiko Akamine took him in. The Kusakabe are a clan of magic users and sword fighters; Misuzu is both of which. Yukiko was raised to be a human weapon from her earliest years so that she could fight in a war in a far off country until her grandfather in Japan took her in, and she falls in love with Takahisa. Its revealed that Kukuri has no memories of her past. Kakeru’s other eye is revealed to be the fabled Eye of Aeon, able to see into the future for instants. Lastly, Shiori Momono the transfer student, explains that her true name is Ursula of the Bookshelf, and that she is an agent of the Holy Office of Index. To sum things up, she’s a powerful magus and also a fragment.
The history of the Eye of Aeon is explained by Shiori. It once belonged to an ancient Drasuvenian king, Verard. According to legend, Verard was tricked by a witch; at this statement the girl in the crystal is instantly mentioned by one of the characters.
A black knight known as Superbia is later revealed to have once been a woman named Misao; an exiled member of the Kusakabe clan.
After Takahisa is tragically killed (this happening after he nearly destroys the city in a mad rage) by Yukiko because he lost control of his powers, the reason for everyone’s being referred to as “fragments” and the reason for the girl in the white dress’s imprisonment is revealed. Their powers come from fragments located inside them. These are the fragments of the VoidStone; the lost source of power for the captured witch. The captured witch is also the witch said to have tricked Verard; Lieselotte. But in truth, she was in love with Verard, and their kingdom was at war. Seeing the carnage, Verard (whom is also the original owner of the Eye of Aeon) felt that the world was a pointless void of chaos, and said that it should just be destroyed. Lieselotte responded by saying that the entire world could come to an end, so long as she had him.
Later on, Verard was assassinated, and the blame was pinned on Lieselotte. In rage and anguish, she dedicated her life to execute Hell Fall and end the world. She is also the source of all of the major eras of turmoil in history. The Holy Office of the Index fought her time and again, until six mages used forbidden magic to strip her of her magic and memories while sealing away what was left (Lisette) in another world. The reason the magic was forbidden in the first place was the terrible cost: the spell casters would be forced to take on hideous forms. The six spell casters then became the Black Knights.
Unaware of her past and in a world where she wouldn’t age, Lisette bided her time until the fragments were gathered in one place, and she could bring them into the parallel world that was created in the spell: the Red Night. The Black Knights quickly came to the conclusion that killing the fragments would stop any chances of Lisette escaping forever, and took on the initiative to kill them.
Yukiko decides to confront Superbia and kill her as revenge for Takahisa’s death. To show how serious she is, Yukiko smashes her glasses (her means of holding back her killing nature) before announcing that she’ll kill Superbia. Unfortunately, Yukiko loses, and dies as her fragment is forcefully removed.
Kakeru and friends finally arrive, a fight ensues, and Superbia drops the fragment. Yuka gives it to Lisette, and she becomes Lieselotte once again. Kakeru seeing her being killed through the eye of Aeon, saves her, but immediately sees what would happen if he tries to fight Lieselotte: she wins and the Hell Fall ensues. Kakeru attempts suicide to prevent this.
While out cold, Kakeru has a flashback of the few days leading up to his sister’s death; the time when his bond with Yuka came to be. When he wakes up, he’s still in the Red Night. They go to the roof and the remaining Black Knights, as well as Lieselotte appear. In a great battle where Shiori and the leader of the Black Knights sacrifice their lives, Lieselotte is defeated once and for all.
Yuka returns to her old self, Misuzu reveals her love for Kakeru, and they and Kakeru are transferred to a new world. Here, no one died, and although they don’t know them anymore, Yukiko and Takahisa are dating and happy, albeit with Saiko still going after Takahisa for his behavior. However, there was no Kukuri or Shiori.
The Black Knights are 6 mysterious figures who reside and protect the crystal imprisoning Lisette Vertorre within Red Night. They call the protagonists ‘Fragments’ and try to kill them for unknown reasons. It is later revealed that they are a group of Index’s apostles called the Punishment Squad who sealed away a witch called Lieselotte Werckmeister 64 years prior to the events of the story with the price of their own lives, while Lisette is, in fact, an amnesiac Lieselotte. In order to protect the seal from being broken, Superbia, the only survivor used her soul binding art to bind the souls of others into the bodies of the Larvaes inside Red Night after the battle.
Fragments of the Void or simply Fragments is a term the Black Knights used to refer to the protagonists of Sin, Damnation and the Atonement Girl arc who bear fragments of the VoidStone in their bodies, which give each of them unique powers.
List of Fragments
Yuka Minase
Misuzu Kusakabe
Tachibana Kukuri
Shiori Momono
Yukiko Hirohara
Takahisa Tajima
At first, it is thought that Kakeru Satsuki is also a Fragment due to his power of precognition and the ability to access Red Night. However, it was later revealed that the Eye of Aeon, the source of his power, has the same origin with the VoidStone of Lieselotte, but not a part of it.
It should be noted that although Lisette also has a fragment of the VoidStone in her body, since she is the origin of other fragments, the Black Knights don’t use the name for her as she is the source.
The Fragments, or the protagonists, are well aware of the danger they are in and decided that it is best to stick together as a group so that they won’t be taken out one by one. However, since a group of students from 3 different years hanging out together is too suspicious for normal people, Yukiko formed the Modernology Club as the facade of the group.
The Eye of Aeon is a magical item with precognitive powers that Kakeru Satsuki possessed.
The Eye is in fact a fragment of the Emerald Tablet, forged into the form of a golden eye by Zoroaster. Throughout history, it has merged itself with different people, although not everyone can use it. The Eye of Aeon was most famous when it fell into the hands of the Drasuvania Kingdom, where it would be pass down each generation. This process stopped when the last Drasuvanian bearer, King Verard was assassinated before a new king was chosen. The Eye was thought to have been lost forever, until Kakeru Satsuki became its bearer. During the finale of the Sin, Damnation and the Atonement Girl arc, Kakeru used up its power and supposed to be absorbed by the Eye, but then Demiourgos absorbed the Eye first, finally putting an end to the Eye’s existence.
The Eye has the power of precognition, giving its bearer a better chance at surviving in battles by predicting the opponent’s movement.
Aside from the abilities that come with the Eye, new Eye’s bearer will also have full access to all the knowledge and skills that have been learned by all of its previous possessors. In the game, this is shown by Kakeru using Onmyouji skills that surpassed Misuzu, and instantly learning skills that Misao used. Ultimately, it also allows the user to realize the desired future out of all the possible futures there are.
Consequently, however, the price for those powers is that upon death, the bearer’s soul is absorbed into the eye as it’s being passed on to a new bearer. When passed on, no traces of the Eye will remain, the body of the dead user will appear as never having had a right eye. Additionally, if the Eye of Aeon’s bearer is killed before his soul is completely sucked out, the Eye will proceed with passing itself onto the next bearer.
Casus Puteus (“Abyss Descend” in Latin), or more commonly known as Hell Fall, is a powerful spell used by Lieselotte Werckmeister to open the gate to the underworld. Upon completion, the spell will flood the world with Larva energy, wiping everything of Aether origin, living things or souls alike, off the face of the planet. In other words, this spell enables Lieselotte to destroy the world and re-create it anew.
This spell was cast inside Lieselotte’s Specialized Bounded Field, Phantasmagoria.
In 1945, Liesette succeeded in activating Hell Fall at Ayamegaoka, Japan. However, after a fierce battle with the apostles of Index, the VoidStone in her body, which also served as the energy source of Hell Fall, was split apart by Georgius of the Rainbow and thrown into seven different dimensions. Consequently, Red Night became an in-between dimension that linked the seven mentioned dimensions with each other. Nevertheless, the giant door to the underworld that Lieselotte opened could not be undone. Therefore, the apostles of Index used their own lives to erect six crystal towers to prevent the portal from growing any bigger.
Red Night
Originally, the Hell Fall changes the area of effect by turning it to red and materializes dark energies into solid creatures. However, after the battle in 1945, Georgius’ seal detached the Specialized Bounded Field from the real world, creating an alternate crimson dimension, which was dubbed Red Night later in the series. Inside Red Night, time flows much more slowly and whatever happens in this dimension does not affect the real world, at least until the spell is completed.
Black Moon
In addition to the blood-red space is the black moon that hovers in the sky. In fact, this “moon” is not the real moon but the gate to the underworld, which will bring forth calamity should the spell reaches its peak. Because of this, its size is several times bigger compare to the true moon and is located directly above the crystal altar.
Crystal Altar
Altering the Shin-Ayame Landmark Tower is a crystal altar with six towers. This is the one of the two things not originally included in the Red night but a consequence of the battle that took place in 1945. The altar is a base of the Black Knights, which serves both to imprison Lieselotte and to stop the black moon from growing any bigger.
Living creatures
Larvae
Resides in the Red Night are numerous black squiggly creatures, which were called Larvae by the protagonists of Sin, Damnation and the Atonement Girl arc. They are, in fact, the dark energy that used to cover the entire Ayamegaoka, given forms by the negative thoughts and feelings of people in the real world. They are the exact opposite of Kukuri’s Abraxas, as they are the manifestation of Larva, the sixth element of void and darkness while Abraxas is the manifestation of Aether, the fifth element that encompasses the canonical 4 and represents light. Every time a Black Knight is defeated, the power to suppress Hell Fall weakens, and the Larvae will evolve, changing both their forms and powers.
Black Knights
Fighting off the Larvae inside Red Night are the Black Knights. They are, in fact, the Punishment Squad of saint Georgius from Index sent by the pope Johanna to Ayamegaoka in 1945. After the battle with Lieselotte, they lost their lives and were forced to use the Larvae’ bodies as their own to continue the job of stopping Hell Fall. In the anime, however, the Black Knights’ forms are the result of the spell they used to seal Lieselotte.
Maiden of the Crystal Palace
Lisette is a girl trapped in the gigantic crystal protected by the Black Knights. She is, in fact, Lieselotte, the caster of Hell Fall and the only real resident of Red Night. After the battle in 1945, her powers and memories were stripped off and Lieselotte was reduced to Lisette, her human origin. Aside from her own name, Lisette Vertorre, she has no memories of her past. She is immortal and does not feel thirst or hunger, only loneliness and fear for the grotesque appearance of the Black Knights who surround her.
Access
Red Night covers the entire Ayamegaoka in a radius of about 15 kilometers. While acting as the linking dimension, it does not affect humans or any other living creatures in any way. However, after the seven fragments of the VoidStone are gathered in Ayamegaoka, each in his/her own dimension, a reaction happens and the bearers of the fragments will be dragged inside Red Night.
The amount of time the fragment bearers can stay inside Red Night varies differently, and each time the Red Night breaks, a fragment bearer will not return to his/her original dimension. Instead, they will be transported into an overlapped reality, which is the result of Red Night’s interference.
It should be noted that the apostles of Index are the ones present on Ayamegaoka at the time Hell Fall occurred. Therefore, they are permanently trapped inside Red Night, with the exception of Superbia, who can travel between Red Night and the real world easily.
Lieselotte Werckmeister is the final antagonist of Sin, Damnation and the Atonement Girl arc and also the main antagonist from Before Story arc. She is the alternate evil ego of Lisette Vertorre and the real master of Red Night.
Her appearance is the same as Lisette’s, except for the fact she has a more confident look and her pupils are slit-shaped. Her color theme is black/purple instead of pure white. Her dress’ sleeves are puffy on each of the shoulder parts and the top of her shoulders are kept revealed. On each of the arm parts: it fits the first half arm on each side, while the second half arm on each side features three-layered purple ruffles. The skirt is black and layered with purple ruffles trimming it. It is also a little shorter than Lisette’s skirt. Unlike Lisette who wears shoes, she is barefoot.
Personality
Lieselotte is the opposite side, and future self, of Lisette. With her immortality, she witnessed the worst of everything, went through much suffering and death, and was disappointed that humans kept repeating the same mistakes over and over again throughout history. As a result, she lost the notion of valuing life and gradually became a sadistic witch. She considers humans nothing more than objects and would kill anyone who dared oppose her. Kakeru Satsuki even depicts her way of fighting as “a child playing with little animals”. Despite this, her only motivation in life is to find a way to kill herself.
However, her meeting with Verard changed her. Her love for him caused her to temporarily forget about seeking death. Instead, she swore to offer her entire existence to his will. She fought for him while he was alive, and continued his wish of destroying the world after his death.
Biography
After receiving the VoidStone, Lisette was able to survive despite having been at the brink of death earlier. She continued living, but her new life was not the same as it was. She witnessed humanity making grave mistakes and repeating them countless times. Sometimes, Lisette was the victim of such mistakes, but the VoidStone kept her living. She was discontent with this ability, as it made her going through pain and death over and over again. Unwilling to live in the world she had lost faith in, she indulged herself in studying magic under the wing of Werckmeister, a magus of the Royal Roman Empire, so that one day she could die. The dark ego of Lisette, who was later known as Lieselotte, became the strongest witch of Europe and was targeted by the Holy Office of Index; other organizations such as Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn also feared her power and pursued her. She continued searching for a way to kill herself even after her mentor’s death, primarily by looking for shards of the legendary Emerald Tablet.
On the journey, Lieselotte heard a tale about an eye that can foresee the future at the border between Asia and Europe. Knowing that it was the Eye of Aeon, she traveled there to investigate and found out that the eye was in the hand of the Drasuvania Royal Family. She intended to take it when the king die, but the Eye had already been passed on to the next king. Consequently, Lieselotte joined the Drasuvania army to approach the new king, Verard, intending to take the Eye one day. However, both of them fell in love with each other before they themselves was aware. Sharing her beliefs, Verard became her new reason for living, and Lieselotte slowly changed to fight for his ideals rather than seeking her own death. Unfortunately, in 1459, Drasuvania suffered from a coup d’etat and Verard was assassinated. Upon hearing the news, she swore to fulfill his dream of destroying the world and began to actively take actions around the world again.
She stopped at Germany some time before the Third Reich appeared. As the Nazi Party came into power, thinking that she could use them, she appeared before Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler during a cult ritual and showed her magical powers to prove that magic existed. In 1936, when the Thule Society was established, using the organization as a facade, she created an organization called the Magic Association of Thule with her as the leader to oppose Index. Not long after, in 1945, Lieselotte made up her mind and decided that the world should be destroyed like how Verard wished it to be. Before World War II ended with the Nazi’s defeat, she left Germany and headed for Japan to execute the formation of Hell Fall. A special task force of Index approached to stop her, but the battle ended with both sides completely disappearing. Lieselotte was considered dead ever since.
Plot
In 1459, Lieselotte had been a part of the Drasuvanian royal army, acting as its strategist and vice commander. In a battle, which Kakeru Satsuki was able to see with his Eye of Aeon, Lieselotte approached Verard for the first time on the battlefield. Saying that he had not seen her before that decisive moment of victory, Verard asked if she had been off to somewhere to contribute her power to. Lieselotte answered that Drasuvania’s army was strong enough so there had not been a need for her to participate. Verard then invited her to stand next to him. He pointed at the battlefield below and ridiculed the fact that Drasuvania had the strongest army in Europe, even if he was a weak leader who only led his soldiers on a killing spree like animals. Lieselotte said that such words were more suitable for a joke, as he, King Verard, possessed the power to control the future, the Eye of Aeon. She added that with the Eye, Verard could take the world in his grasp like how Iskander had almost done in the past. Verard replied that there was no meaning in taking the world, because his only wish was to see everything destroyed, shocking Lieselotte. As the battle came to a close, Verard mentioned that Index had proposed an alliance with him several months ago, implying that they had been trying to capture Lieselotte. He revealed that he thought destroying everything was the only way to show God his respect, once again rendering Lieselotte speechless. He then said that he wanted to hear her story on the table at the victory feast that day.
The Witch of Destruction
A short amount of time had passed ever since Lieselotte came to Drasuvania. She had decided to stop traveling around the world and stayed in Drasuvania to help Verard annihilate all the invaders. While commanding a smaller force, Lieselotte ordered the army to form a pincer attack to corner the enemy, then she would deal the finishing strike. Her words made the soldiers march toward the enemy force like berserkers. She silently admitted that she was enjoying being feared by the others. She decided that Verard had truly made her feel like living again, as he had become her ideal, and for that, she would kill more if he wished her to. Suddenly, a seriously injured soldier came and delivered a shocking news: Verard had been captured by the enemy. Lieselotte was aghast, as she did not believe that Verard could be captured so easily. The soldier revealed that one of the feudal lords betrayed the King and led the enemy inside the castle and annihilated the main force from within. With his dying breath, the soldier told Lieselotte that she should not return to the castle because the enemy would have occupied it by that time, and Verard was certainly executed. He said that she should live on to fulfill Verard’s dying wish. Lieselotte heard what had been relayed to her, but asked herself why should she keep on living if Verard, her reason for doing so, was already dead. She then screamed.
Magic Association of Thule
After a long time of wandering, Lieselotte made a stop in Germany to prepare for her final plan. On a certain day in 1945, while Lieselotte was in Wewelsburg Castle, thinking about how her soul has been corrupted so far, an officer of Thule came in and forwarded an encrypted report from Walter Dietrich, Thule’s lowest seat. In the report, Lieselotte noticed that he was leaving for Japan after his last duty, which was also where she had intended to set for. Unexpectedly, the report also revealed that Walter had made an attack on Index’s underground library at the Vatican and successfully stole three artifacts from there. This caused her to reconsider Walter’s value, as she did not expect a youngling in magic to have achieved such a feat. Lieselotte then ordered the Thule officer to be dismissed, to which he complied. After the officer had left, Lieselotte pondered and thought that if Walter could seize the Emerald Fragment in Japan, he would be a potential threat. However, in the end she decided that no matter what he tried, she would still carry on her plan to destroy the world.
Battle of Ayame Hill
Around the beginning of May, 1945, Lieselotte arrived in Japan. She set up the formation of Hell Fall as soon as she got to the center of Ayame Hill and waited patiently for its completion. However, on May 13, the Punishment Squad arrived and attempted to interrupt the spell. Lieselotte was slightly irritated when she detected someone trying to get in her way, but then changed her mind and considered the squad’s resistance as nothing more than some final entertainment.
Lieselotte started the battle with Phantasmagoria; Misao Kusakabe and Samson’s group were her first targets. While Misao was separated, Samson fell under the illusion of Misao being attacked by Lieselotte and used his body to shield her from a powerful fire blast. However, the one he protected turned out to be none other than the witch. Unable to put up any resistance, he was burned to death. The next target of Phantasmagoria was Uastyrdji, Benedictus and Scholastica’s combat machine. While dealing with a gigantic Larva, Benedictus fell under the illusion of seeing Scholastica with human flesh, but then became the one who raped and killed her. Shocked by the cruel illusion, Benedictus mentally broke down and never returned to reality even as Lieselotte’s monsters dragged him out from Uastyrdji and ripped him apart. Meanwhile, Scholastica fell under the illusion of Misao viewing her paper crane as trash, which shocked and reduced her to a very weak state.
Sebastianus and Irene’s group were the next targets. However, this time Lieselotte faced them herself. Lieselotte was interested in Sebastianus’ willpower and fought one-on-one with him. Sebastianus and Irene’s combined attacks managed to harm Lieselotte’s body each time they switched their pattern, but her regeneration ability made all their efforts in vain. Refusing to give up, Sebastianus wrapped Irene’s blade around his arm and squeezed the witch with that arm, aiming for a double kill. Lieselotte let the suicide attack take place, which tore her and Sebastianus’ bodies apart. Lieselotte quickly regenerated while Irene was grieving for her lover’s death. She used Phantasmagoria on Irene, making her think that Sebastianus was alive, then ripped her lower body off, killing her in the process.
Finally, Lieselotte targeted Misao, who managed to continuously attack her until Lieselotte strengthened her arms’ power and stopped her blades. Struck with fear, Misao called out Georgius’ name which made Lieselotte curious and abandoned the fight, leaving Misao to die by her swords (using the power of Phantasmagoria). Misao later returned to battle, revealing that she broke free from Lieselotte’s illusion. This time, Misao fought even more fiercely than before, which made both of them get high from excitement. However, when Lieselotte decided to humiliate Misao by giving her ecstasy from having her organs caressed, Misao could not resist the pain and fainted.
Noticing a sharp change in her surrounding, Lieselotte left her opponent and continued to look for Georgius. She found the saint alone charging a spell, and decided to interfere by unleashing Omnium Principia. However, Misao returned to Georgius’s aid and reflected the spell with her Tenken Kusakabe, incinerating the witch. Lieselotte quickly regenerated, but the counterattack brought Georgius the time he needed to unleash Arcus Pactum. Lieselotte was surprised to be bound by a time-space spell. As she saw different images of her being reflected on the crystals created by the spell, she tested it by biting her molar and realized that Georgius’ attack was dividing her. Knowing that there was no way to escape, Lieselotte let Georgius perform the spell, but said that she would return, no matter how long it would take. As Georgius finished the spell, Lieselotte’s VoidStone was broken into seven fragments: six of which were scattered into different worlds while one remained inside Lieselotte, who turned back into her old pure self, Lisette.
Red Night
On October 29, 2009, Lieselotte merged with Yukiko Hirohara’s VoidStone fragment and temporarily awakened. As she saw Avaritia, she recognized that he was the Saint who sealed her away by sacrificing his own body and mocked his ragged state. Avaritia told her to be quiet and said that he would always stop her even if he had to sacrifice everything else. Lieselotte said that a brat like him should be the one to be quiet and claimed that no matter how he tried, the result would be the same, because he had already lost when she activated Hell Fall. Avaritia angrily spat back, saying that a corrupted witch like her was in no position to judge him. He then used high-speed chanting to strengthen the seal. Lieselotte resisted, but lost to him and fainted due to her incomplete state.
Second Battle of Ayame Hill
On November 2, Yuka’s VoidStone fragment, which contains the power of Phantasmagoria, merged with Lieselotte and gave her a tremendous boost of power. Avaritia, realizing that he could not hold the seal for much longer, told Superbia to let go of the seal and unleash the dragon in his body, hoping that it would destroy all the remaining Fragments and Lieselotte as well. After he had transformed into the dragon, breaking the seal at the same time, Lieselotte broke the crystal imprisoning her and faced Kakeru. She was disappointed that a kid like him was all the world had left to oppose her. Kakeru said that he was not just any kid, but the current bearer of the Eye of Aeon, which was housing Verard’s soul. Having recognized the Eye, Lieselotte asked him to join her and fulfill his (Verard’s) wish of destroying the world. Kakeru refused and said that he had come to stop her, not join her. Lieselotte was devastated. Kakeru continued, saying that the old her, Lisette, would not have wished for the destruction of everything and that she had gone too far. However, Lieselotte was persistent. Saying that she refused to believe that her 750 years of hatred was a mistake, she declared that Kakeru was not the representation of Verard, but merely another obstacle. Ignoring Kakeru’s plea, Lieselotte engaged him in battle.
At first, she went easy on him, telling him not to die too early so as not to disappoint her. However, as the battle prolonged, Kakeru gradually got used to drawing the power of the Eye of Aeon and gained the upper hand. Finally recognizing him as a true threat, Lieselotte used Phantasmagoria on him, giving him illusions of being killed by his friends to break his spirit and finish the battle. Unfortunately, Kakeru had already been aware that the Eye of Aeon’s power could pierce through illusions to let him see the truth; therefore, her Phantasmagoria was dispelled.
After breaking through Lieselotte’s illusion, Kakeru proceeded using the Eye of Aeon to the max of its capabilities and destroyed the fragments of the VoidStone one by one. Lieselotte resisted but she could not do anything since Kakeru’s blade was aiming at her VoidStone, not her actual body. When Kakeru struck a final time, she willingly let him stab her so everything would come to an end. Seeing the shadow of Verard in the Eye of Aeon, she died in Kakeru’s arms with a smile.
The Holy Office of Index or Index for short is the largest magical organization in the world of 11eyes. The Catholic Church in Vatican serves as its headquarters.
Index’s main objective is to keep the world in their control and eliminate everything considered heretic by Catholic Church standards. For them, Lieselotte Werckmeister, who defies their belief and wishes for the world’s destruction, is considered as the top priority threat. Ironically enough, their crusade in 1209, which destroyed Béziers and its entire population, is the determined factor that gave birth to Lieselotte.
After World War II, Index was believed to have been closed down, but the appearance of Ursula of the Bookshelf in Ayamegaoka in 2009 proved that the organization had simply been working on the shadows.
Although unknown to ordinary people, Index has been secretly taking action and manipulating the world to maintain peace and balance; therefore, Index’s name is well known in the world of magi and sorcery users. Even the Onmyouji clan of Kusakabe is aware of the organization’s existence. However, Index’s way of doing their job is also known to be very rational and ruthless. Shuu Amami himself states that Index is simply the tyrant of the supernatural world who will eliminate all supernatural threats indifferently. It was Index who was responsible for the destruction of the Kuroshida clan, a clan of Japanese western magi some time before World War II.
Around 1945, the Witch of Babylon, Lieselotte, headed for Japan; Index’s intelligence reported her movement and suggested that she was planning something big. Due to political problems at the time, Index could not mobilize a massive force. Therefore, the head of Index, Johanna sent Georgius of the Rainbow of the Fourteen Saints and his subordinates, a team of well trained and highly skilled members to kill her. However, both Georgius’ group and Lieselotte mysteriously disappeared after the fierce battle. Without any traces of Lieselotte left, Index categorized her as eliminated.
Some time later, Index assigned Agatha of the Silver Cross to keep watch on Ayamegaoka and report anything out of the ordinary. However, Agatha was kidnapped around 2009, prompting Index to send Ursula of the Bookshelf under the name ‘Shiori Momono’ as her substitution. On September 17, having received a report from Shiori that Georgius’ team reappeared as hostile, Index gave a Royal Order to Shiori to execute Georgius and his subordinates on sight for treason. It is believed that, according to Shiori, had she reported Lieselotte’s existence at Ayamegaoka to Index, another crusade would have taken place and the entirety Japan would have most likely been wiped off from the face of the planet.
