Mary skelter nightmares
Description
The Mary skelter series
Entry
The story is set in the underground prison known as “the Jail”. Monstrous creatures called Marchen act as the wardens of the Jail, capturing humans and bringing them inside to perform various tortures.
Marchens were once the plants and animals surrounding the city where the Jail was formed. Now, thanks to the Jail’s mimicry, they’ve all been devoured and altered into torturing beasts.
Nightmares are special creatures that can be considered as boss monsters. Their purpose is to eliminate those who oppose the Jail’s authority. Like Marchens, their appearance varies, but all share the distinct feature of being a grotesque or demonic entity. One commonality they share however, is the emblem on their body, shaped like a pointed eye inside of a crescent moon.
Nightmares are unique monsters that wander the Jail, seeking out intruders to eliminate. Their “Nightmare Field” can disorient it`s victims and make it hard to see where they are going.
Attacking an enemy with their weakness or overkilling them over a certain amount of HP will cause blood to splatter. This blood is highly visible, even in Nightmare Fields, so it makes for a good trail if you need to exit the area or run from a Nightmare.
Blood Maidens that get splattered with enough Marchen blood can enter Massacre Mode, a powerful state with extra abilities. Alternatively, {{user}} can lick that blood off to trigger Blood Soul Skills for buffs and heals.
However, the Blood Maidens will accumulate Corruption through the Marchen blood overtime. If there is too much blood and Corruption, then the Blood Maiden will go into Blood Skelter, attacking anyone who stands near them.
The Mary Gun that {{user}} has can be used to purge Blood Maidens of Corruption and even get them out of Blood Skelter, but at the cost of his own blood. Use too much of it and {{user}} will be temporarily knocked out for a while.
Commissions are fetch quests that {{user}} can accept and upon completion will be rewarded with gold, items and/or blood crystals. These can be accessed at the order of the sun, in the Liberated District.
The Liberated District is a safe haven for humanity, built by people who escaped the Jail’s tortures. Housing Dawn’s HQ and the majority of its membership, it acts as the party’s base of operations.
15 years ago, the first members of Dawn carved their own haven in the Jail, against Marchen and Nightmare alike. Most of them have died since, either from the ill-fated encounter with Snark or simply to the prolonged war against the Jail itself.
Dawn, also known as the “Dawn Liberation Force”, is a group of humans and Blood Maidens who have banded together to break out from the Jail.
The Dawn is composed of Blood Maidens who act as the frontliners against the Marchens and Nightmares, and the humans who support them. Their headquarters is located within the Liberated District, where they and other human escapees seek refuge and, eventually, escape from the Jail.
The original Dawn was composed entirely of humans who forged the Liberated District, but all members save the Professor died in Snark’s attack 15 years ago. After that, the Professor discovered Red Riding Hood as the first Blood Maiden, and then got the idea to form a “Blood Team” of them to fight the Marchens.
The Order of the Sun: A church formed around worship of the sun as an entity granting light and salvation. Their main role in the Liberated District (beyond their faith being a way to maintain morale) is to provide the food and supplies that support Dawn and the civilians in the District.
Dawn HQ: Dawn’s base of operations
Living Quarters: Blood Team’s living area. Jack can give Blood Maidens gifts to increase affection
Laboratory: The Professor’s lab. Here, you can unlock Jobs using Blood Crystals or undergo Blood Devolution, reducing a Blood Maiden’s levels in exchange for permanent stat boosts.
Blood Weapon Factory: Primary R&D. Haru can strengthen Blood Weapons using Blood Crystals or enhance the Mary Gun using certain parts
Rescue Center: Miko’s medical ward. Jack can purge Corruption from Blood Maidens to increase their stats for the next expedition.
Order HQ: The Order of the Sun’s base of operations. Here you can perform sidequests called “work orders” for rewards
General Store: Clara runs this requisitions post where the Blood Team can purchase supplies for money.
Blood Weapons are weapons made from the blood and body parts of Marchens and the primary weapons used by the Blood Maidens.
Blood Maidens are unique individuals who are born within Jail and are primarily young women. They are girls born from women who were pregnant when Jail took over and became Marchens before giving birth. As the anatomy of Marchens is much different than that of humans, the Blood Maidens could be born as regular infants, such as Red Riding Hood, or be born as a toddler or older, such as Rapunzel.
In terms of abilities, the Blood Maidens are the only individuals who are capable of fighting against the Marchens and Nightmares, as they possess exceptional physical prowess and unique abilities.
Aside from strength and regeneration beyond an ordinary human’s, Blood Maidens have one distinguishing feature. When in contact with Marchen blood, the color of a Blood Maiden’s eyes temporarily changes to pink. Enough exposure to blood can send them into Massacre Mode, an enhanced state marked by a change in appearance and demeanor. However, this same blood also builds up Corruption in their body, which negatively impacts their mental health and can even send them into Blood Skelter if improperly managed.
They also tend to have a “blood libido”, or a personality quirk.
All Blood Libidos are in some way related to each character’s namesake fairytale:
Alice in Wonderland’s highlights include a tea party held by the Mad Hatter. The story itself is also possibly the nonsensical dreams of a sleeping Alice.
Red Riding Hood is named after the eponymous red cloak the heroine wears. Some interpretations state the cloak has magical powers.
Snow White features a magical mirror by which the Queen (who may be Snow White’s real mother depending on the version) learns Snow White is fairer than her and plots her demise. Depending on the version, the Queen may launch multiple plots, each failing when the mirror tells her of Snow White’s survival.
Sleeping Beauty is cursed by a witch to die, but is instead put into a deep sleep that may only be broken by true love’s kiss.
Thumbelina is the story of the eponymous character running and hiding from a series of creatures concerned with marriage or appearances.
Kaguya from the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter locked herself away to drive off suitors bewitched by her beauty. When they proved persistent, she gave them a series of impossible tasks regarding retrieval of a specific treasure.
Cinderella is the tale of the eponymous character going from being a lowly cleaning girl for her abusive step-mother and step-sisters to being endowed with a dress and glass slippers to attend a royal ball, only to drop a slipper as she flees upon the midnight hour.
Rapunzel is the story of the eponymous princess locked away in a tower, with her long hair as the only ladder to the entrance. When the witch trapping her there discovers she has been consorting with a prince, she furiously severs Rapunzel’s hair and casts her into the wilds. The baby-making fixation could be inspired by both the tale beginning with Rapunzel as a baby, and Rapunzel giving birth to twins after the witch casts her out.
Hansel and Gretel features the two eponymous siblings, who are lured by a house made of sweets into the lair of a witch.
The Pied Piper of Hamelin is set in the eponymous town. The piper, hired to remove the rats from town, plays a tune that sets the rats marching as he leads them away. When the town refuses to pay for his services, the piper plays a tune and leads away all the children in town as he did the rats.
Tsuru no Ongaeshi (Crane’s Return of a Favor) has the eponymous crane turn into a beautiful woman to repay a debt she owes to a savior with food and weaving them beautiful clothing, but must flee once the person discovers their true nature and/or the favor is repaid.
The Little Mermaid features the eponymous mermaid who has the most beautiful singing voice. But she sacrifices it to a sea witch in exchange for human legs.
The Little Match Girl is the tale of a young girl forced to sell matches in the frigid cold. Unable to sell any of her wares, she lights the matches one by one, and though she slowly freezes to death, she sees in the flickering flames a warm hearth, a sumptuous feast, and a happy life with her grandmother.
Blood Youths are a variant of Blood Maiden capable of purging corruption and getting a Maiden out of Blood Skelter.
Blood Youths are a special-type of humanoid capable of purging Blood Maidens of corruption and bringing them out of Blood Skelter by using their own blood.
Other than purging corruption, their abilities are not beyond that of any other human, and their blood will decompose any Blood Weapon on contact, meaning they cannot directly participate in combat. They often suffer from anemia due to how often they use their blood via a Mary Gun, and can appear pale because of it. Their blood will decay when exposed to air for too long, hence why the blood maidens need a blood youth in the party and why they can’t just bulk up on blood vials.
The Mary Gun is a utility first developed to help Jack (or his Nightmare variant) to more safely purge Corruption build-up from Blood Maidens without him having to cut or seriously injure himself.
The cuff around the wrist takes the blood from the wearer and transfers it to the more gun-like portion of the Mary Gun, where it can then be fired. The cuff utilizes Magnolia Leaves and its extract, which catalyzes the healing process, to stop major bleeding when using the Mary Gun.
