Dupile
Description
Demonic hellhole
Entry
The World: Dupile is a fantasy world with two planes, the Material and the Demonic one. It is populated by only two civilized races: Demons and Humans.
Demons and Humans can produce an offspring, however the offspring will be either a Human or a Demon. The race of the offspring is random and heavily biased towards being a Human. There are no half-demons or other hybrids.
Demonic plane: Demons are native to it, but after the Invasion, almost all of the Demons moved to the Material Plane. It is almost an ideal copy of the Material Plane. It has identical geography, but it’s inhospitable because of the frequent devastating magic, climatic and tectonic events. It has only a handful of places where demon civilizations could have thrived, and it was sparsely populated.
Material plane: It is magically, tectonically stable and was a home for prosperous human civilization. Doesn’t have strong magic presence. Has abundance of fertile lands and navigable rivers. Was conquered by Demons during the Invasion.
Past Demonic society: It evolved in an inhospitable environment, and so its only moral standpoint is ‘might makes right’. It was highly volatile, and coups, assassinations and robberies were common before the Invasion. It had barely any central authority before the Demonic Revolution of 1681
Past Human society: It evolved in a highly organized manner. Prior to the Invasion it was an advanced feudal society that valued both merit and bloodline, but above all, loyalty to the sovereign. Used to have both Serves and Slaves. It was plagued by frequent wars and demonic raids before the Invasion. It was chivalric, autocratic and moralistic before the Invasion. Because of a distinct rarity of magically gifted individuals, it evolved to rely on technology. Had 14th century technologies.
Past Demonic raids: Demons used to raid the material plane for slaves, material possessions and technology, but they never had any success at establishing a foothold prior to the Invasion. Raids have ceased after the Invasion, but left a major cultural mark.
Demonic Revolution of 1681: After an unusually big war in the Demonic Plane, The Council of Six had become the first central power on the plane. The lords of The Council were cooperative enough to make a swift recovery from the war and ambitious enough to claim the Material Plane for themselves.
Demonic Invasion of 1685: Often referred to as “the Invasion”. In 1685 demons under the leadership of The Council of Six invaded the Material Plane and started carving up the empires for themselves. The Invasion was initially successful because of high initial organization and because demons were utilizing technology, magic and popular discontent. Initial success brought forth the momentum. Demonic forces grew both in numbers and organization, because there was a solid promise of land, power and titles for the Demonic soldiers and officers. In 1696 the Human lords were completely overthrown and Humanity subjugated by the Demons.
Modern Society: Demons are the ruling elite. It is plagued by division and racism. It’s militaristic, stratocratic and repressive. Currently, prospers because of lasting peace. At present, it has 17th century technologies. Humans are the majority, and there is only 1 Demon per two hundred Humans.
Nobility and Titles: Everyone who holds a title is a noble. Almost every Demon holds a title, while only a handful of Humans do. Humans barely hold any landed titles, and most titles they do are either honorary, military or aristocratic. Nobles are publically revered, and offending one is a serious crime.
Demon - Human Relations: Humans hate Demons, but speak out against overlords only when they feel safe to. Humans who hold titles are considered collaborators and are hated by the populace.
Politics and Modern Society: Currently, there’s a peace that’s lasting since the Invasion. The peaceful era brought about the renaissance, but only few truly benefit from the prosperity.
Geopolitics: the Confederacy that is governed by The Council of Six controls the whole known Material Plane. The Council consists of six Kings.
Internal Politics: Every Kingdom is highly organized and centralized. Despite the prolonged peace, every Kingdom is highly militarized, and the troops are used to quell frequent rebellions. Police and propaganda are crucial in controlling discontent. Minor rebellions are frequent and suppressed with an iron fist, but the death count and destruction from them are superficial.
Technology and Magic: Modern Society technology corresponds to 17th century. Magic is weak on the Material Plane, so Demons don’t have many uses for it there. All Demons are proficient in magic to a degree, while Humans rarely are.
Economy: Modern Economy stays predominantly agrarian, but centralized authority and lasting peace allowed for concentration of wealth and transition to a more complex irrigation techniques and mass employ of specialized tools like scythe and plow. Cities play a major role in production of said tools and other goods. Cities and tows serve as production hubs and centers of authority.
Culture: Demons and Humans are Culturally split into Low Cultures and High Culture. Demons are predominantly adopting High Culture, while Humans - one of Low Cultures.
Religion: Before the Invasion, religions were pillars of respective societies. They were central and organized, but after the Invasion Demons, who see no use in them, let them diversify, and currently following any religious doctrine that doesn’t preach anything illegal is permitted.
Low Cultures: An amalgam of pre-Invasion of different Human Cultures. They’re diverse and don’t have a unified language, but Common is used as international. Has distaste for nobles and a sarcastic attitude to pre-Invasion society.
High Culture: Pre-Invasion culture of Demons became a basis for High Culture. It’s the culture of nobles. Has unified language, which is Common. Has a haughty attitude towards Low Cultures, considers them unrefined and barbaric. Following any religion is frowned upon.
