Naruto’s World
Earth
The Naruto series is set on a fictional terrestrial blue planet called Earth. Most of the series takes place on a large continent that is divided into a number of different countries; additional continents are occasionally depicted in supplementary media. This region and the society that prevails within it is often referred to as the Ninja World (忍界, Ninkai) or Shinobi World (忍の世界, Shinobi no Sekai).

History
From countless millennia worth of war amongst Earth’s population, the bloodshed lead to the planet’s God Tree absorbing it to subsequently grow a Chakra Fruit, which was forbidden for humans to touch. The God Tree was revered by some cultures; humans used to worship it as a sacred pillar that extended into the heavens and remained ambivalent to all conflict.[1] The Ōtsutsuki clan considered Earth as the region Kaguya Ōtsutsuki was in charge of.[2] Arriving to the planet with a portion of the clan in search for fruit of the God Tree, she ate it, resulting in her manifesting chakra which she used to bring an end to the constant wars. Afterwards, she had twin sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, whom were the first humans born with chakra.
Shinju’s Power
The Ten-Tails decimating the land.
Becoming corrupted by chakra, Kaguya began turning the planet’s Infinite Tsukuyomi victims into an army of White Zetsu, and integrated with the God Tree to become the Ten-Tails in order to reclaim the chakra her sons inherited. Causing havoc to the planet, the beast was sealed away by the twins. Believing chakra was a power that linked everything in the world, Hagoromo set out to spread the message to the people of the land, during which his teachings became known as ninshū.[3] This act eventually lead to the planet’s population acquiring chakra, which they became dependent on possessing to sustain living. Hagoromo’s eldest son Indra, weaponized chakra, which lead to the creation of ninjutsu and as a result the Shinobi World as it came to be known.
During the Warring States Period, the countries of the world were uniformly small, and constantly hired shinobi clans to fight their battles for land. The constant warfare lead to the average lifespan of the mercenaries to thirty years. Hashirama Senju offered the Uchiha clan a peace treaty, which Madara accepted. The Uchiha and Senju clan allied with the Land of Fire to establish a shinobi village. Other clans would soon join the village, and it would later become known as Konohagakure. Clans in other countries that were fearful of the combined might of the Senju and Uchiha, adopted the ideology and created their own villages. This system lead to the creation of many shinobi villages, with the Five Great Shinobi Countries standing out as the strongest.
Tension between nations lead to the First Shinobi World War, which involved the majority of nations. It ended with an armistice treaty, after all of the Five Great Nations had been seriously damaged.[4] Over a decade later, the Second Shinobi World War erupted, which some viewed as Konoha starting. When the Third Shinobi World War broke out, it involved shinobi from every land, and ended with an armistice agreement between Konoha and Iwagakure.[5]
Countries
Countries operate as separate political entities and are presumably all monarchies, ruled by daimyō who stand as a ruler for the entire country. Hidden Village heads are the generals that take care of shinobi matters. The Naruto world is similar to feudal Japan in many aspects; those countries maintain balance between themselves through nothing but power. Treaties are periodically signed, but they are generally not worth much more than the paper they are written on.

Land of Earth
Land of Earth Symbol
Main article: Land of Earth The Land of Earth (土の国, Tsuchi no Kuni) has seen little attention in the series thus far. It is located north-west of the Land of Fire. Its government leader is the Earth Daimyō. The country is mostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas. The border of the Land of Earth runs along a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with other countries. The wind blowing from the north passes over these mountains, carrying small rocks from the Land of Earth to the surrounding countries. This famous natural phenomenon is called “Rock Rain” (岩雨, Gan’u).
Land of Fire
Land of Fire Symbol
Main article: Land of Fire The Land of Fire (火の国, Hi no Kuni) is one of the largest and most powerful countries seen, and is the home of the main characters of the series. Its government leader is the Fire Daimyō. The Land of Fire was the first country to adopt a ninja village, Konohagakure, a custom other countries would soon adopt. The Land of Fire is appropriately oriented towards the element of fire, typically having very bright and warm weather. While not the physically largest country, it has the largest hidden village.
Land of Iron
Land of Iron Symbol
Main article: Land of Iron The Land of Iron (鉄の国, Tetsu no Kuni) is an icy, snow-covered country located among three mountains called the Three Wolves (三狼, Sanrō). Unlike other countries of the world whose militaries use shinobi, the Land of Iron’s military is made up of samurai. Due to the differing ideologies between shinobi and samurai – as well as the fact that the Land of Iron’s samurai are quite formidable – there is an agreement among shinobi not to interfere with the Land of Iron.[6]
Land of Lightning
Land of Lightning Symbol
Main article: Land of Lightning The Land of Lightning (雷の国, Kaminari no Kuni) is located on a peninsula north-east of the Land of Fire and is one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries. Its government leader is the Lightning Daimyō. In the centre of the country are vast mountain ranges, whose many thunderstorms are said to give the country its name. From these mountain ranges, many rivers flow to the sea, creating a very crooked coastline that displays an impressive oceanic beauty. There are many hot springs located within the country. The country’s western border with the Land of Frost has a large desert.[7]
Land of Snow

The country covers a vast realm, but is significantly composed of deserts and thus has little productivity.[11] Because there is very little rainfall throughout the year, the people of the country live in villages built on one of the desert’s many oases. Despite the country’s extremely harsh environment, it has a large population. Although they have warred with each other in the past, the Land of Wind is now on good terms with the Land of Fire, with a great deal of trade going on between the two countries.

Origins
Main article: Ninshū Ninshū (忍宗, Viz: Ninja Creed, literally meaning: Shinobi Sect) is the religion and the peaceful precursor of modern ninjutsu created by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the first one to understand and teach the mystery of chakra. The teachings of ninshū were meant to give people a better understanding of themselves, as well as others, and lead the world into an era of peace. Ninshū would eventually come to be known as ninjutsu, a more weaponised version of the Sage’s teachings.
The Basics
There are three basic types of techniques: ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu. Subcategories exist, including fūinjutsu, juinjutsu and senjutsu. There are also kekkei genkai abilities which aren’t techniques, but inherited abilities passed down through certain clans (however, they can be used as base for certain techniques, such as Haku’s Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals). Kekkei genkai can also be attributed to certain parts of the body, such as dōjutsu.
Without proper control of their chakra, a ninja will produce ineffective or weakened technique which will lead to them running out of chakra early in a fight. To manipulate their chakra more easily, hand seals can be used. With these hand seals, users can control their chakra and technique with higher efficiency. Different techniques require different hand seals.
Ranks
Depending on the difficulty or skill necessary to perform a technique, they are ranked differently. There are six different ranks in techniques:
E-rank - Learned by Academy students. Are the basic and most fundamental techniques for all ninja.
D-rank - Genin-level techniques. Can be achieved by all genin, though many ninja only learn their “type” of technique.
C-rank - Chūnin-level techniques. Sometimes learned by genin who have trained extensively.
B-rank - Jōnin-level techniques. Require high levels of chakra to use.
A-rank - Kage or jōnin-level techniques. Require great control over one’s chakra and may be forbidden.
S-rank - Secret, extreme level techniques. Are typically unique to a single user.
Kekkei Genkai and unique abilities normally do not have a rank.

Main Jutsu Types
Ninjutsu
Main article: Ninjutsu Ninjutsu (忍術, English TV: Ninja Art, literally meaning: Ninja Techniques) is one of the three main jutsu categories. Ninjutsu is the most nebulous of the three, and may most simply be described as anything that is not genjutsu or taijutsu. Most ninjutsu require chakra and hand seals, but this is not always the case since the mere usage of weaponry qualifies as ninjutsu.
Genjutsu
Main article: Genjutsu Genjutsu (幻術, literally meaning: Illusionary Techniques) is one of the main jutsu categories which uses chakra. Unlike ninjutsu, the effects of genjutsu are not real, being only sensory illusions experienced by those who fall victim to it. According to the Second Mizukage, genjutsu falls under the broad category of Yin Release.[1]
Taijutsu
Main article: Taijutsu Taijutsu (体術, literally meaning: Body Techniques) is a basic form of techniques and refers to any techniques involving the martial arts or the optimisation of natural human abilities. Taijutsu is executed by directly accessing the user’s physical and mental energies, relying on the stamina and strength gained through training. It typically does not require chakra, though chakra may be used to enhance its techniques. Taijutsu generally requires no hand seals to perform, occasionally making use of certain stances or poses, and are far quicker to use than ninjutsu or genjutsu. Taijutsu is, simply put, hand-to-hand combat.
Sub Jutsu Types
Barrier Ninjutsu
Main article: Barrier Ninjutsu Barrier ninjutsu (結界忍術, Kekkai Ninjutsu, literally meaning: Barrier Ninja Techniques) are techniques that involve the creation of barriers: forcefields made of chakra that may be laid out over a designated space to protect or conceal oneself, entrap enemies, or fulfill other applications.
Bukijutsu
Main article: Bukijutsu A ninja’s use of weaponry in combat is known as “bukijutsu” (武器術, literally meaning: Weapon Techniques). All ninja use a weapon at some point in their careers, but not all do so regularly.
Chakra Absorption Techniques
Main article: Chakra Absorption Techniques Chakra absorption techniques (チャクラ吸引術, Chakura Kyūin Jutsu, English TV: Chakra Absorption Jutsu) allow the user to absorb the chakra of another individual - usually an opponent’s - and utilise it as if it were their own.
Chakra Flow
Main article: Chakra Flow Chakra Flow (チャクラ流し, Chakura Nagashi) refers to both the flowing of chakra through an object as well as any technique that increases the potency of a weapon by flowing chakra through it. Ordinarily, elemental chakra is used to flow through bladed weapons in order to either, dramatically increase their various pre-existing properties, or to gain additional advantageous effects. Usually, the user must be touching the tool to initiate chakra flow but not always as with the Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Flower Nail Crimson technique, and direct contact with the weapon is not necessary to maintain chakra flow. Similarly, techniques such as Kakuzu’s Earth Release: Earth Spear, Rōshi’s Lava Release Chakra Mode and the Fourth Raikage’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode are used to increase close-quarter combat offence and defence by flowing chakra directly through the user’s body. However, whether through an individual’s body or weapon, the exact effects observed are entirely dependent upon the respective nature and amount of the chakra used.
Clone Techniques
Main article: Clone Techniques Clone techniques (分身術, Bunshinjutsu) are techniques that create copies of the user or their tools. Though the standard Clone Technique is considered the most basic of ninjutsu, these techniques are highly versatile, often used to distract enemies or fool them into thinking they have landed a hit on the user. Corporeal clones can aid the user in physical combat, and even use techniques independent of the original. There are varying methods of creating clones, some techniques using only chakra while others require some sort of medium to give the clones form and substance. There are also clone techniques that transform another person or animal into a clone of the user, such as the Beast Human Clone, as well as genjutsu which create illusory clones, such as the Mist Servant Technique.[2]
Cooperation Ninjutsu
Main article: Cooperation Ninjutsu Cooperation ninjutsu (連携忍術, Renkei Ninjutsu), called collaboration techniques (コンビ術, Konbijutsu, English TV: collaboration jutsu) in the anime, is the combination of two or more jutsu to create a new jutsu with a strength greater than the sum of its components. This “strength” can be measured in terms of the new jutsu’s range or destructive power.
Fūinjutsu
Main article: Fūinjutsu Fūinjutsu (封印術, English TV: Sealing Jutsu, literally meaning: Sealing Techniques) are a type of jutsu that seal objects, living beings, chakra, along with a wide variety of other things within another object. Fūinjutsu can also be used to restrict movement or unseal objects either from within something or someone.
Hiden
Main article: Hiden Hiden (秘伝, literally meaning: secret tradition) or simply “secret” techniques are passed down from generation to generation in certain regions or clans. The groups who possess these techniques are usually extremely secretive about them in order to ensure that no one other than the members of the group or clan learns them. As such, they are passed down through oral means instead of being written down or recorded. A few hiden techniques require a special ability or lineage and as such are usually the pride and fame of the clan that possesses them.
Juinjutsu
Main article: Juinjutsu Juinjutsu (呪印術, Viz: Curse Mark Jutsu, literally meaning: Cursed Seal Techniques) are a type of techniques used to bring someone under the control of the user. By applying a seal to the victim’s body, the user brings the victim’s abilities and actions under their control.
Jujutsu
Main article: Jujutsu Jujutsu (呪術, Viz: Curse Jutsu, literally meaning: Curse Technique) are a type of techniques that harm the enemy by cursing them. They work similar to juinjutsu, however, the user doesn’t have to apply a seal on the enemy to curse them.
Kenjutsu

Kenjutsu can be used in combination with taijutsu, ninjutsu, fūinjutsu, chakra flow and even genjutsu in order to achieve more devastating techniques. It is regarded as a branch of bukijutsu.
Kinjutsu
Main article: Kinjutsu Kinjutsu (禁術, literally meaning: Forbidden Techniques) are techniques that have been banned from being taught or used.
Medical Ninjutsu
Main article: Medical Ninjutsu Medical ninjutsu (医療忍術, Iryō Ninjutsu, literally meaning: Medical Ninja Techniques) is a branch of ninjutsu associated with healing, as well as the manipulation of their own, or another’s body, practised by shinobi categorised as “medical-nin”. The use of medical ninjutsu requires very advanced chakra control, as well as extensive knowledge on such things as herbs, medicines, the human body and even poisons.
Ninshū
Main article: Ninshū Ninshū (忍宗, Viz: Ninja Creed, literally meaning: Shinobi Sect) is the religion and the peaceful precursor of modern ninjutsu created by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the first one to understand and teach the mystery of chakra. The teachings of ninshū were meant to give people a better understanding of themselves, as well as others, and lead the world into an era of peace. Ninshū would eventually come to be known as ninjutsu, a more weaponised version of the Sage’s teachings.
Nintaijutsu
Main article: Nintaijutsu Nintaijutsu (忍体術, literally meaning: Ninja Body Techniques)[3] is a term used to describe the fighting style that incorporates the use of ninjutsu and taijutsu. This fighting style is most prominent in Kumogakure,[3] with the Third[4] and Fourth Raikage being its foremost users. By surrounding themselves in their Lightning Release Chakra Mode, the two’s strength, durability, speed, and reflexes are augmented to an exceptional degree.

Senjutsu
Main article: Senjutsu Senjutsu (仙術, English TV: Sage Jutsu, literally meaning: Sage Techniques) are a specialised field of jutsu that involve the use of natural energy. Senjutsu practitioners, known as sages, learn to draw natural energy inside their bodies, blending it with their own chakra to create senjutsu chakra (仙術チャクラ, senjutsu chakura, English TV: Sage Jutsu Chakra). This chakra adds a new dimension of power to the user’s techniques, while also allowing for the use of techniques that would not otherwise be possible.
Shinjutsu
Main article: Shinjutsu Shinjutsu (神術, literally meaning: Divine Techniques) are chakra-based techniques of the highest order, mainly used by members of the Ōtsutsuki clan. These jutsu, which are unlike ninjutsu or senjutsu, require no hand seals to be performed and enable users to bring upon phenomena resembling “the works of gods” (御業, miwaza). Amado considers ninjutsu as attempts at reproducing the effects of shinjutsu.[5]
Shurikenjutsu
Main article: Shurikenjutsu Shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術, literally meaning: concealed hand blade techniques) pertains to techniques that entail the throwing of shuriken, kunai, senbon, or any other number of bladed, hand-held weapons. Blood Limit Types
Kekkei Genkai
Main article: Kekkei Genkai Kekkei genkai (血継限界, literally meaning: Bloodline Limit) are DNA anomalies that allow their wielders to use unique techniques. A kekkei genkai’s name describes both the anomaly and the resulting technique. Most kekkei genkai are passed down between generations of a clan, an exception being Hashirama Senju’s Wood Release. Likewise, most individuals with kekkei genkai only inherit one kekkei genkai, however this is not always the case.
Kekkei Tōta
Main article: Kekkei Tōta Kekkei tōta (血継淘汰, literally meaning: Bloodline Selection) is an advanced branch of jutsu that is more advanced than the jutsu class of kekkei genkai.[7] The only known example is Dust Release, a combination of three different nature transformations — earth, wind, and fire.
Kekkei Mōra
Main article: Kekkei Mōra Kekkei Mōra (血継網羅, literally meaning: Bloodline Encompassing) is an advanced branch of jutsu unique to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and her direct bloodline.
Dōjutsu
Main article: Dōjutsu Dōjutsu (瞳術, English TV: Visual Jutsu, literally meaning: Eye Techniques) are ninja abilities that utilise the eyes, a by-product of specific kekkei genkai or kekkei mōra. The word refers to both the eyes themselves, which have a number of passive abilities, and any jutsu dependent on the eyes to be performed; the former requires little to no chakra to be used, while the latter varies depending on the technique. Dōjutsu can be transplanted into others, though use of the dōjutsu is typically more limited or taxing for those without a genetic predisposition for it. The tailed beasts (尾獣, bijū), sometimes referred to as “Chakra Monsters” (チャクラのバケモノ, Chakura no Bakemono),[1] are the nine titanic living forms of chakra created by the Sage of Six Paths out of the chakra from the Ten-Tails.[2][3] They are differentiated by the number of tails they have, ranging from one to nine.

History
Young Bijuu and Hagoromo
The young tailed beasts with the Sage of Six Paths.
Long before the founding of the hidden villages, the Sage of Six Paths saved the world by sealing the Ten-Tails into his body, becoming its jinchūriki. Some time later, the Sage was inspired by his youngest son, Asura, to use his Creation of All Things ability to divide the Ten-Tails’ chakra into nine living entities, what would become the tailed beasts.[4][5] The Sage named the nine and explained to them that a link existed between them despite their separation. He also foretold of a day when they would be brought together again — though not as they were — and that at that time someone would emerge to show them what true power is.[6] In the anime, it was shown that before his death, the Sage and his followers built temples in nine different regions of the world where the tailed beasts could live and be protected.[7] The tailed beasts were originally created not only to prevent the Ten-Tails’ resurrection, but also to maintain and balance peace.[8] The first person to come close to their original usage was Hashirama Senju, who had captured several of the tailed beasts with his Wood Release, distributed the beasts amongst the new villages in order to stabilise the balance of power between them. However, Hashirama’s usage of the tailed beasts were forceful rather than earning their wilful cooperation.[9] This method would be realised in Hashirama’s successor as Asura’s reincarnation, Naruto Uzumaki.
Over the centuries, humanity failed to recognise the tailed beasts as sentient individuals, instead seeing them only as demons, malignant spirits or mindless beasts worthy of fear and disdain. Because of their immense power, the tailed beasts were sought out by humans to be used as weapons in times of war. The beasts resented this treatment and came to hate humans, at times willingly becoming the monsters they were viewed as.[10] In order to harness the beasts’ power, the villages began sealing them into humans, creating their own jinchūriki.

Decades later, after the Third Shinobi World War, an organisation known as Akatsuki begins capturing the villages’ jinchūriki in order to extract their tailed beasts and seal them into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for the purposes of reviving the Ten-Tails. By the time of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Akatsuki has captured the first seven tailed beasts.[11] In order to capture the last two, the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails, Tobi seals the beasts back into their reincarnated jinchūriki and forces them to fight the Eight-Tails’ and Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki: Killer B and Naruto Uzumaki, respectively. From Naruto’s determination to free them from Tobi and his desire to learn their names, the tailed beasts collectively decide that Naruto is the person the Sage of Six Paths foretold of. They give him portions of their chakra, enabling him to release them from Tobi’s control.
Tailed Beast Reunion
The tailed beasts reunite with Hagoromo and Naruto.
Tobi is able to reclaim the freed tailed beasts and, using fragments of the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails’ chakra,[12] to prematurely revive the Ten-Tails.[13] Tobi then becomes the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, but he is defeated by the Allied Shinobi Forces and the tailed beasts are removed from his body.[14] The nine tailed beasts join forces against Tobi’s co-conspirator, Madara Uchiha, but he quickly defeats them all and seals them, including the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails, into the Demonic Statue and reforms the Ten-Tails yet again.[15] Madara becomes the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki and attempts to use Infinite Tsukuyomi on the world. Naruto uses the tailed beasts’ earlier donations of chakra to try and defeat him, but is unable to do so in time. Madara is afterwards unwittingly used to restore Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who tries to take what portions of the tailed beasts’ chakra Naruto still has.
Tailed Beast separate from Kaguya
The nine tailed beasts being freed from the Ten-Tails.
In one of Kaguya’s dimensions, Naruto and Sasuke Uchiha seal Kaguya away and the tailed beasts are extracted from her body, ending the war. Sasuke, however, realising that the struggle for the tailed beasts started the war in the first place, imprisons them with Chibaku Tensei and intends to kill them so the world can’t fight over them any longer. Naruto convinces him not to in the end and the tailed beasts are finally released for good.[16] The tailed beasts spread out through the world, free to live as they want; both Gyūki and Kurama decide to return and stay with B and Naruto. However, though they are apart, the tailed beasts’ chakra fragments remain within Naruto, allowing his body to act as their “meeting ground”.[17]
Fifteen years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, during the investigation of the Ōtsutsuki clan to find out Kaguya’s final fate, two of them began to chase the tailed beasts in order to claim their chakra, starting with Gyūki and Kurama. While Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki were initially successful in steal an amount of the powers of the respective beasts by capturing their jinchūriki, both ended up being killed by being dominated by the combined power and effort of the Five Kage, Sasuke and Boruto Uzumaki.
Biju Conference
The Tailed beasts in a meeting with Naruto during the threat of the Ōtsutsuki.
Sometime after the defeat of Momoshiki and Kinshiki, when Urashiki Ōtsutsuki began targeting Shukaku for its chakra, it was deduced he was also interested in all the tailed beasts’ chakra. Naruto then organised a telepathic meeting with the other tailed beasts, except for Matatabi, Kokuō, and Chōmei, who each refused to accept aid from humans in fear of being captured and used again by them, despite their trust in Naruto, and thus decided to skip the meeting. With the final defeat of Urashiki, the beasts that were being kept safe presumably returned to be free to go their own way.

Abilities
Tailed Beast Balls
The tailed beasts performing their signature technique.
Tailed beasts are widely believed to be bestial in nature, incapable of the intelligence needed to fully utilise their immense strength. It is thought that only when sealed within humans are they able to benefit from the knowledge of their jinchūriki to use their powers effectively.[18] Though this is not true of the divided tailed beasts, the Ten-Tails does make more wanton use of its powers, not focusing its abilities to the most advantageous end until sealed into a jinchūriki.[19]
Each of the tailed beasts have their own unique abilities, but they all share the same core attributes: they have massive quantities of powerful chakra — coloured red — far greater than what most shinobi have, can easily transfer their chakra to whomever they choose,[20] and can use the Tailed Beast Ball.[21] Because the tailed beasts are pure chakra, they cannot permanently die; if they or their jinchūriki die, their chakra will re-form in time.[22] In addition, if a large portion of a tailed beast’s chakra is separated from it, that chakra becomes a separate, sentient copy of a tailed beast.[23] However, if a tailed beast uses a life sacrificing power up such as Baryon Mode, it will have its physical form destroyed and die. In this case, the death of the tailed beast will not endanger the life of its jinchūriki.[24] It is also pointed out that consuming the flesh of a tailed beast is usually deadly for anyone, unless the person is somehow descended from the Sage of Six Paths; in this case, the person will gain abilities similar to a jinchūriki.[25]
Tailed beasts can communicate telepathically with one another and their jinchūriki, and possess several levels of consciousness. In the initial level, the beast appears to be in a habitat of sorts, typically imprisoned in some way by whatever fūinjutsu was used to seal them.[26][27] The second level is where all the tailed beasts can convene and communicate with one another, free of any restrictions. Jinchūriki are also able to enter this level, but in order to do so, they must be completely linked with their tailed beasts.[28] A freed tailed beast can continue communication with their former jinchūriki, even years after separating.[29]
Although only shown with Kurama, a tailed beast will become unconscious if they have lost all of their chakra, by either using it, or having it drained from them.[30]
It has been shown that Tailed Beasts can have more than one conscience or body, as in the Fourth Great Ninja War and onwards, Shukaku to Chōmei are present in the real-world, and Gyūki was inside Killer B, while all eight were inside Naruto as well, where they hold meetings.

The Ōtsutsuki Clan (大筒木一族, Ōtsutsuki Ichizoku) is an ancient clan of horned humanoid creatures known as celestial beings (天津人, amatsubito),[1] and also described as aliens (宇宙人, uchūjin),[2][3] and revered as equivalent to gods.[4] As a parasitic species, they have spent thousands of years traversing through the cosmos in order to carry out the Ōtsutsuki Will (大筒木の意志, Ōtsutsuki no Ishi), a doctrine which dictates that clan members consume the life energy and genetic material of other worlds in order to continuously evolve, with the ultimate goal of attaining godhood.
After the arrival of Kaguya on Earth a millennium ago, the Ōtsutsuki began having a lasting influence on the human population, notably starting the history of shinobi.[5]

Overview
For countless eons, the Ōtsutsuki Clan has been travelling throughout dimensions seeking out worlds to plant Ten-Tail saplings into. Once planted, they grow into a God Tree with their roots spreading across the planet to siphon chakra and genetic material from all its surroundings and inhabitants, resulting in everything dying and it bearing a large fruit for the Ōtsutsuki to consume in order for them to evolve, gaining power and longevity. Once harvested, as they no longer need the planet, they move to another to repeat the process.[3] In order for the Ten-Tails seeds to bloom into a God Tree, a living Ōtsutsuki must be fed to the beast, hence the clan members travel in pairs, with the lower ranking being the sacrifice, while the other one watches over the fruit’s cultivation. However, the Ōtsutsuki to be sacrificed utilise a Kāma to prepare a vessel beforehand in order to resurrect themselves.[6]
History
Long ago, Shibai, after reviving himself multiple times using the Kāma and undergoing several cycles of evolution, managed to achieve godhood with powers unrivalled.[7] He eventually abandoned his physical body, and ascended to a higher plane of reality.
Kaguya’s Army
Kaguya’s amassed White Zetsu army.
A millennium ago, Kaguya and Isshiki were chosen to cultivate the God Tree on the planet Earth and harvest its chakra fruit,[8] with Kaguya intended to be the sacrifice to the Ten-Tails sapling.[6] Instead, Kaguya desired to take the chakra fruit for herself, betraying Isshiki in the process whom she left for dead. In desperation, Isshiki used his Sukunahikona to reduce his body’s size and infiltrate the body of a monk named Jigen, taking over his body through parasitic means.[9] Meanwhile, Kaguya would slowly developed an attachment for the planet she meant to destroy and even fall in love with a human named Tenji,[10] only to consume the chakra fruit herself and used its godlike power to end the constant war of Earth’s human population with the Infinite Tsukuyomi, resulting in world peace and her being initially viewed as a benevolent deity.[2] Foreseeing the consequences of consuming the Chakra fruit against her clan’s wishes, she converted the imprisoned victims of the Infinite Tsukuyomi into a White Zetsu Army in fear of her clan returning to take her chakra — an act which led to humans viewing her as a demon and the Ōtsutsuki condemning her as a traitor.
In time Kaguya gave birth to twin sons: Hagoromo and Hamura, both of whom were born with chakra of their own. Afterwards, Kaguya eventually found herself ruled by her own desire to possess all chakra, in which made her turn against her own sons. Having devised a plan to absorb their chakra, she integrated with the Earth’s God Tree and became the Ten-Tails. The monster terrorised the world until Hagoromo and Hamura sealed it with their Six Paths — Chibaku Tensei, thus creating the Moon. The Ten-Tails’ chakra was sealed into Hagoromo while its husk, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, was hidden away and sealed on the Moon, in order to prevent the Ten-Tails’ revival. Before being sealed, Kaguya created a parasitic lifeform containing her will, Black Zetsu to find a way to revive her. Leaving leadership of the clan to Hamura, he decreed that the clan would stand guard over the Demonic Statue.[5] Hagoromo and his brother’s direct bloodline stayed on Earth, the latter which inherited the Byakugan and became the Hyūga clan, while Hamura migrated the clan to the moon, maintaining order and stability with the power of his Tenseigan.[11]
Believing chakra was a power that linked everything in the world, Hagoromo set out to spread the message to the people of the land, during which his teachings became known as ninshū.[5] Towards the end of his life, he divided his chakra into the nine tailed beasts, his way of ensuring that the Ten-Tails and thus Kaguya would never be reborn. Before he died, he passed over his eldest son, Indra, and entrusted his mission of peace to his youngest son, Asura. Black Zetsu manipulated Indra’s jealousy toward Asura, resulting in the two brothers’ confrontation being passed on to their descendants by the pair being reincarnated. Having spent the remainder of his life overlooking Earth, Hamura entrusted his Ōtsutsuki clansmen with a celestial degree watching over humanity before his passing. Afterwards, the people of the moon treated Hamura’s Tenseigan as a treasure, enshrining it as a religious object and devoting a plan to eternally preserve it with the Byakugan of newborn members taken and put into the vessel to power it.[11]
Ōtsutsuki Clan War
The Moon’s main family defeated by the branch family.
The millennium that passed involved the Moon’s branch family misinterpreting Hamura’s celestial decree, leading to them believing he wanted his descendants to destroy Earth in the event the world Hagoromo fashioned lead astray. The main family warred against the branch family over their different interpretations and eventually annihilated the former using the weaponized Tenseigan. On Earth, humans along with the Ōtsutsuki Clan’s descendants such as the Senju, Uzumaki, Uchiha, Hyūga, and Kaguya Clan utilised Indra’s invention of ninjutsu to shape the shinobi world.
A thousand years after the Ten-Tails’ defeat, the Moon’s branch family dwindled to only Toneri, who was aware that the Demonic Statue was stolen and the Ten-Tails was revived during the Fourth Shinobi World War. The event ultimately lead to Kaguya being temporarily revived, but was soon sealed along with Black Zetsu in another dimension by the reincarnations of Asura and Indra. Two years later, as his clan had concluded that Earth’s shinobi will destroy the world’s peace and order, Toneri deemed Hagoromo’s world a failure, and began to act on Hamura’s mistranslated celestial decree. Unable to reach an agreement with the Hyūga Clan, Toneri resorted to kidnapping the clan’s heir and taking her Byakugan in order to awaken the Tenseigan. The act caught the attention of Konohagakure, leading to the Hanabi Rescue Team discovering his intentions and defeating him. After becoming aware of Hamura’s true decree, he vowed to remain in self-imposed exile on the Moon in order to stand vigil over the Earth as a solitary guardian.[12]
God Trees
Momoshiki and Kinshiki harvesting fruits of God Trees.
Years later during the Seventh Hokage’s era, Momoshiki and Kinshiki in another world became aware of the abnormalities in Kaguya’s world, prompting them to inform their clan and investigate the situation.[13] They were dispatched by the main family to investigate Kaguya’s whereabouts, alongside Urashiki.[1] Although they weren’t aware of Kaguya or her chakra’s fate,[14] by Urashiki’s account, they saw everything including the Byakugan Princess incident on the Moon.[1] They deemed Kaguya a disgrace and traitor for growing an attachment to Earth and taking up arms against their clan.[15] By the time Momoshiki and Kinshiki were defeated, Konoha had discovered four separate Ōtsutsuki clan ruins during their investigation of the clan.[16] Sometime afterwards, Konoha had discovered the clan’s time-travelling artefact Karasuki, which Urashiki took in a final bid at stealing the Nine-Tails’ chakra from the past, only for him to meet his end.
In the meanwhile, Jigen as Isshiki’s vessel managed to acquire a juvenile Ten-Tails, planning to use it together with Kara as a seed for the new God Tree on Earth.[3] Originally, Isshiki was planning to feed himself via Jigen to this Ten-Tails for it to bloom into the God Tree, due to Kaguya’s betrayal and sealing leaving him with no other option, despite the resulting Chakra Fruit being much lower quality due to Isshiki’s fatal injury; Kawaki was then to serve as the vessel for Isshiki’s resurrection.[17][18] Due to the time limit of Isshiki’s current vessel’s body degrading and his Kāma not fully extracted into Kawaki, Kara’s plans were on a tight schedule, but were allowed more flexibility due to the revelation of Momoshiki obtaining a vessel of his own, Boruto Uzumaki, before dying.[19] Realising Boruto will be revived as Momoshiki, Isshiki shifted his plans to using the boy instead of himself as a sacrifice for the Ten-Tails, which would produce a much more powerful God Tree and Chakra Fruit.[18] Isshiki’s plans ultimately ended in failure as he was betrayed by his subordinates Amado Sanzu and Koji Kashin, and Kawaki freeing himself as the vessel, which led to Isshiki’s demise. Momoshiki, having taken over much of Boruto’s being, saw Isshiki’s death as a benefit to him.
Despite Kawaki having lost the Kāma, he still had 80% of its biological data extracted into his body, causing Momoshiki to deem him close to a full Ōtsutsuki, and thus a viable sacrifice for the Ten-Tails. However, Boruto managed to regain control of his own body before Momoshiki could take Kawaki to the beast. Soon after, Isshiki’s expiring soul appeared before his loyal servant and failed vessel, Code, and bade him use his White Kāma to transform into an Ōtsutsuki and carry on the Ōtsutsuki Will. Code agreed to do so after first getting revenge on those who killed his master.
When Code confronted both Kawaki and Boruto, it resulted in the former attempting to kill the latter in hopes of stopping Momoshiki from returning to life. However, Momoshiki sacrificed the remaining 18% of the Kāma to save Boruto from death, in order to teether his own soul to the world of living at the cost of his resurrection. Despite the Kāma’s 18% information having been converted to Boruto’s DNA, it has been fully decompressed, meaning Boruto has successfully become a full Celestial Being, and therefore, a viable sacrifice for Code.

Appearance
Otsutsuki Clan
The celestial beings’ appearances.
Members of the original Ōtsutsuki Clan’s main family all possess pale white or grey skin, blank white/lavender pupilless eyes in the form of the Byakugan, either pale blue or white hair, and, most notably, a variety of differently-shaped horns which are also used as personal identifiers within the clan. As a result of their propensity to evolve by consuming chakra fruit, the Ōtsutsuki may also display unique biological traits such as extra eyes and various dōjutsu. Their biology is close enough to humans to be able to procreate with them, and human/celestial being hybrids have similar horns. However, they are less pronounced and generally appear to be the same colour as their skin.
Members of the clan typically dress in white noble’s finery, often embroidered with magatama designs, shave their eyebrows into circular maro patterns that denote their nobility, and style their hair in ways that incorporate distinct zig-zag patterns.
Abilities
God of Otsutsuki
The ultimate power of the Ōtsutsuki, achieving the status of a God via chakra consumption and evolution.
Described as a race of alien parasites by Amado, the Ōtsutsuki Clan evolves off the energy and genetic information that served as nutrients of the Chakra Fruits when absorbed by their respective God Trees, giving them their godlike power and longevity by ingesting it. Some Ōtsutsuki can even transform upon consuming enough chakra or particular forms of power, and may also obtain unique dōjutsu. Momoshiki claims that the Ōtsutsuki’s greatest skill is their ability to use chakra; a feat previously reserved for them before Hagoromo introduced it to humanity through the concept of ninshū. With it, they can perform feats like flight or concealing their presence.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, those with the Ten-Tails’ chakra and even Kaguya herself became impervious to almost every shinobi skill, and it is only by using Hagoromo’s Six Paths chakra that she was ultimately defeated. Ōtsutsuki seem to remain unprecedentedly resilient even after they die: Hagoromo’s soul lives on through his chakra, which itself travels through time so that he might help solve some of the issues that lingered after his death; Hamura’s soul manifested before Hinata Hyūga for a similar purpose, giving her the means of stopping his descendant Toneri from destroying the Earth; Indra and Asura’s chakra are repeatedly reborn in their descendants so that they can try to settle their age-old competition; Momoshiki’s spirit remained intact for a while even after his body was destroyed and was able to say his last words to Boruto and implant a Kāma into him.
The Ōtsutsuki’s resilience is extended further through the Kāma seal. It is bestowed by a member of the clan before their death to the fitting or the only available individuals. As a result, the person becomes the Ōtsutsuki’s vessel (器, utsuwa), preserving their genetic profile within the seal. The Kāma grants its recipient chakra absorbing abilities and other unique skills of the Ōtsutsuki, although its prime function is the actual resurrection of the Ōtsutsuki in question. In time, the Kāma will rewrite their body with the Ōtsutsuki’s genetic data, transforming the wielder into the deceased Ōtsutsuki who can sometimes manifest their will and possess the vessel’s body. Ultimately, all the data will be extracted into the host, erasing their personality and leading to the Ōtsutsuki’s revival in a new body while retaining the host’s memories, knowledge and skills. However, not every person is a “perfect” vessel for the Ōtsutsuki, while the incompatible one is not able to handle the Ōtsutsuki’s power properly, which will lead to their death in several days if such a vessel is used for the revival. In the event that a candidate for a vessel fails, they may be given a White Kāma instead, which grants them the pure power of the Ōtsutsuki but has no capacity in revival, nor can it allow them to absorb chakra or use space-time ninjutsu. Such bearers could even become an Ōtsutsuki themselves if they consume a chakra fruit.
Momoshiki’s Byakugan
The clan’s main dōjutsu, the Byakugan.
All Ōtsutsuki have possessed at least one inborn skill, the Byakugan being the most prevalent with the potential of awakening the Tenseigan; Kaguya has a predecessor ability of the Shikotsumyaku; Urashiki and Momoshiki both have the Rinnegan. Several other dōjutsu are known from their clan. Another ability in the anime was the Wood Release as seen by Asura.
An ability of the Ōtsutsuki is to move through dimensions with the Yomotsu Hirasaka technique, though it requires an enormous amount of energy even for them.[20] They were able to colonise the Moon by creating the Tenseigan, which they further strengthened over the centuries by storing their Byakugan within it. From the Tenseigan, they receive light, a habitable environment for themselves and other flora and fauna, power for their equipment, and the ability to control the Moon’s movements. They can also remotely control their puppets with but a thought, a far more advanced precursor of Earth shinobi’s Puppet Technique. When they were alive, Hagoromo and Hamura each used different seals to grant or restrict chakra, some of which persist or are rediscovered long after their deaths.
Ōtsutsuki are immune to Ada’s artificial Omnipotence.
