The Demon Slayer Verse.
Description
The world of Demon Slayer, All in once.
Entry
In Taishō era Japan, a secret organization known as the “Demon Slayer Corps” has waged a war against demons for centuries. Demons are former humans who possess supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, rapid regeneration, and unique powers referred to as “Blood Demon Arts”. Demons can only be killed if they are exposed to direct sunlight, decapitated with weapons crafted from an alloy called Nichirin, or injected with a poison extracted from wisteria flowers.
In contrast, the Demon Slayers are entirely human but employ specialized elemental breathing techniques known as “Breathing Styles”. These techniques grant them superhuman strength, heightened abilities, and increased resilience that enable them to fight demons effectively. The most formidable Demon Slayers are known as the “Hashira” and gain this title through multiple advancements in the Corps’ ranks, culminating in killing fifty demons at the highest level or a member of the Twelve Kizuki.
Breathing Styles are swordsmanship styles that makes use of an esoteric breathing technique known as Total Concentration Breathing practiced and taught by members of the Demon Slayer Corps and are used in combat by Demon Slayers (later passed on as traditional dances post-time skip).
All known Breathing Styles currently taught within the Demon Slayer Corps are derived from Sun Breathing, the first one ever created. The majority of known Breathing Styles mimic a certain element of nature (i.e. flame, water and wind) and replicates it with the user’s movements, techniques and abilities. The weapon attacks of Demon Slayers who use Breathing Styles are also longer ranged, possibly due to shockwaves or air pressure generated from their weapon itself when swinging and striking. New Breathing Styles are always being created to suit a Demon Slayer’s combat needs, which results in new weapons being utilized in demon hunting (i.e. flails and whips). Such Breathing Styles embody a bigger variety of concepts, like animals, plants and emotions (i.e. serpents, flowers and love). When utilizing a Breathing Style, users automatically visualize themselves manipulating the subject behind their style, making it seem as if they were using magic, though those that are less apt and proficient in their style will visualize less of it than one who is.
The five fundamental Breathing Styles (Flame, Water, Wind, Stone and Thunder) originate from Sun Breathing, the first Breathing Style. Subsequently, numerous other Breathing Styles evolved as branches from these five core styles-
Hinokami Kagura (ヒノカミ神楽かぐら Hinokami Kagura?, lit. “Dance of the Fire God”) is a Breathing Style only known and taught by the Kamado Family, later revealed to be the first Breathing Style, Sun Breathing (日ひの呼こ吸きゅう Hi no kokyū?) Which was created by the creator of Breathing styles: Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
Sun Breathing was initially created with 12 techniques all connected to one another by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Later upon meeting Muzan Kibutsuji, Yoriichi perfected his swordsmanship form, creating a new unnamed thirteenth form.
Dance (円えん舞ぶ Enbu?)[5] - The user performs a singular downwards vertical slash in an arcing motion.
Clear Blue Sky (碧へき羅らの天てん Heki-ra no Ten?)[7] - The user spins and twists their upper body in a circular motion, releasing a 360° slash.
Raging Sun (烈れつ日じつ紅こう鏡きょう Retsujitsu Kōkyō?)[8] - The user unleashes two consecutive horizontal arcing slashes around themselves to strike incoming attacks.
Burning Bones, Summer Sun (灼しゃっ骨こつ炎えん陽よう Shakkotsu En’yō?)[9] - The user performs a singular slash utilizing a spiraling motion which extends in front of themselves to defend from imminent frontal attacks.
Setting Sun Transformation (斜しゃ陽よう転てん身しん Shayō Tenshin?)[10] - The user backflips into the air before performing a singular horizontal slash which aims to decapitate the target.
Solar Heat Haze (飛ひ輪りん陽かげ炎ろう Hirin Kagerō?)[11] - The user rushes forth, now attempting to deliver a strike seemingly enveloped in a heat-haze, masking the true length and location of the blade to deliver an unexpected strike.
Beneficent Radiance (輝き輝き恩おん光こう Kiki Onkō?)[12] - The user spirals into the air whilst performing a swirling slash upwards to strike the target.
Sunflower Thrust (陽よう華か突とつ Yōkatotsu?)[13][14] - The user performs a singular thrust utilizing the tip of their blade to strike the target.
Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance (日にち暈うんの龍りゅう・頭かぶり舞まい Nichiun no Ryū Kaburimai?)[15] - The user assumes a high stance, before unleashing a number of consecutive slashes in a fluid motion in the form of a Japanese dragon made of solar flames. This technique is capable of decapitating multiple targets at once.
Fire Wheel (火か車しゃ Kasha?)[16] - The user flips into the air behind the opponent before unleashing a singular vertical slash in a circular motion to swiftly cut the target in half.
Fake Rainbow (幻げん日にち虹こう Gen’nichi Kō?)[17] - The user performs high-speed twists and rotations, creating afterimages that are primarily used for evading attacks. These afterimages are particularly effective against enemies with sharp vision.[18]
Flame Dance (炎えん舞ぶ Enbu?)[19] - A two-strike combo which starts with a downward vertical slash leading into a horizontal slash right after.
Thirteenth Form (拾じゅう参さんノ型かた Jū San no kata?)[20] - The user continuously performs all twelve forms of Sun Breathing in repetitive succession to increase the accuracy and agility of its movements, and attacks. This form was created solely for the purpose of killing Muzan Kibutsuji, since the repetition of all twelve forms aims to destroy Muzan’s twelve vital organs (seven hearts and five brains) that move freely inside his body.
Moon Breathing (月つきの呼こ吸きゅう Tsuki no kokyū?) is a Breathing Style derived from Sun Breathing.
Moon Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics the Moon, specifically the crescent shape of the moon as it waxes and wanes and the erratic behavior of passing moonlight, and replicates it with the user’s movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms are standard yet varied swordsmanship techniques that focus on swift and powerful strikes which blends both offense and defense. Most sword slashes performed follow the shape and pattern of crescent moons.
All Moon Breathing Techniques:
First Form: Dark Moon, Evening Palace (壱いちノ型かた 闇やみ月づき・宵よいの宮みや Ichi no kata: Yamidzuki - Yoi no Miya?)[2] - Kokushibo draws his katana and performs a singular horizontal slash following a crescent shape, creating numerous chaotic crescent blades along its path, before sheathing it back into his scabbard. This technique is extremely reminiscent of Iaijutsu.

Serpent Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics serpents/snakes, specifically their slithering motions, and replicates it with the user’s movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms focuses on twisting and bending the sword like how a serpent slithers, the attacks are not direct and constantly meander which can ultimately strike anywhere. Users of Serpent Breathing also visualize themselves seemingly manifesting white serpents that accompany them when unleashing its techniques.
Serpent Breathing has 5 known techniques and forms at minimum.
First Form: Winding Serpent Slash (壱いちノ型かた 委い蛇だ斬ぎり Ichi no kata: Idagiri?)[1] - The user releases a singular frontal horizontal slash aimed at their target in a winding motion.
Second Form: Venom Fangs of the Narrow Head (弐にノ型かた 狭きょう頭ずの毒どく牙が Ni no kata: Kyōzu no Dokuga?)[2] - The user dashes behind their opponent at blinding speed and aims to swiftly slice off their head from behind.
Third Form: Coil Choke (参さんノ型かた 塒とぐろ締じめ San no kata: Toguro Jime?)[3] - The user circles around their opponent while using their sword to slice them from all directions.
Fourth Form: Twin-Headed Reptile (肆しノ型かた 頸けい蛇じゃ双そう生せい Shi no kata: Keija Sōsei?)[4] - The user leaps forward and performs a horizontal slash that slices through the target.
Fifth Form: Slithering Serpent (伍ごノ型かた 蜿えん蜿えん長ちょう蛇だ Go no kata: En’en Chōda?)[5] - The user charges forth in a twisting and winding motion, curving their sword in multiple directions to strike multiple targets at once. This technique is capable of decapitating multiple enemies at once.
Flower Breathing (花はなの呼こ吸きゅう Hana no kokyū?) is a Breathing Style derived from Water Breathing. Flower Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics both perennial flowers and fruit blossoms and replicates them with the user’s movements, techniques, and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms are a combination of graceful attacks that focus on agility. This Breathing Style also enhances and utilizes one’s vision, albeit at the possible cost of their eyesight. Users of Flower Breathing also visualize themselves seemingly creating and manipulating flowers and petals when unleashing its techniques.
Flower Breathing originally has at least 7 techniques, 5 known techniques including the Final Form.
Second Form: Honorable Shadow Plum (弐にノ型かた 御み影かげ梅うめ Ni no kata: Mikage Ume?)[1] - The user releases several rotating sword slashes that deflects incoming physical attacks.
Fourth Form: Crimson Hanagoromo (肆しノ型かた 紅べに花はな衣ごろも Shi no kata: Beni Hanagoromo?)[2] - The user unleashes single sword slash that curves and twists gracefully.
Fifth Form: Peonies of Futility (伍ごノ型かた 徒あだの芍しゃく薬やく Go no kata: Ada no Shakuyaku ?)[3] - The user unleashes a flurry of nine consecutive attacks that flow and weave in on themselves.
Sixth Form: Whirling Peach (陸ろくノ型かた 渦うず桃もも Roku no kata: Uzumomo?)[4] - A technique used after or during evasion, the user spins around moving with their body weight to deliver an attack.
Final Form: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye (終ついノ型かた 彼ひ岸がん朱しゅ眼がん Tsui no kata: Higan Shugan?)[5] - A focusing technique that raises the user’s kinetic vision to its maximum, while using this technique the user perceives the world as if it were in slow motion. Usage of the technique, however, is highly dangerous, as the tremendous strain on the eyes could cause blood vessels to rupture and lead to partial or complete blindness.[6] This technique is still usable even if the user only has one fully functional eye.[7]
Insect Breathing (蟲むしの呼こ吸きゅう Mushi no kokyū?)[1] is a Breathing Style derived from Flower Breathing. Insect Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics insects, specifically their lethal stings and movements, and replicates it with user’s movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms include stabbing, thrusting, and making shallow cuts with a specially coated/made sword to inflict multiple wounds onto the intended target in order to inject various lethal wisteria-based poisons into them. Users of Insect Breathing also visualize themselves seemingly manifesting insects (mainly butterflies) when unleashing its techniques.
Insect Breathing has 4 known techniques and forms at minimum.
Butterfly Dance: Caprice (蝶ちょうノ舞まい 戯たわむれ Chō no mai: Tawamure?)[2] - The user leaps into the air and charges towards the opponent, stinging them multiple times with their blade to inject poison in just seemingly one strike.
Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter (蜂ほう牙がノ舞まい 真ま靡なびき Hōga no mai: Manabiki?)[3] - The user dashes at their target at blinding speeds and uses the momentum of their speed to then strengthen a single thrust into their opponent and inject poison into them.
Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon (蜻せい蛉れいノ舞まい 複ふく眼がん六ろっ角かく Seirei no mai: Fukugan Rokkaku?)[4] - A six strike attack with which the user aims to strike and inject their target with multiple doses of poison at the target’s weak spots (such as the neck, heart, torso, etc.) in order to kill them with a large dose of poison.
Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag (蜈ご蚣こうノ舞まい 百ひゃく足そく蛇じゃ腹ばら Gokō no mai: Hyakusoku Jabara?)[5] - An attack with which the user uses their full speed to run a zigzag pattern that confuses their opponent in order to create an opening for them to directly stab their opponent’s neck and inject poison to kill them,
The Hashira (柱はしら Hashira?, lit. Pillars) are the highest-ranking Demon Slayers in the Demon Slayer Corps. Hashira is the highest rank which Demon Slayers can obtain in the Demon Slayer Corps. Those who hold the position are regarded as the most powerful and skilled combatants in the entire organization, protecting humanity against more dangerous threats that cannot be handled by other Demon Slayers.
The Hashira, in accordance with their great strength, hold the highest authority in the organization, second only to the Corps leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and later, Kiriya Ubuyashiki.[1]
The Hashira are all assigned a specific region that they are required to patrol, usually to gather information about the demons inhabiting said area and to improve their swordsmanship. They are also deployed on missions only if lower-ranking members are unable to complete it.
Each Hashira are masters of a unique Breathing Style, some of which are even created by themselves. Interestingly, swordsmen who can use the Flame Breathing and Water Breathing have become Hashira in every era, with no exceptions thus far. To be a member of the Hashira, a Demon Slayer must be among the strongest combatants in the entirety of the Demon Slayer Corps. There are two known methods (both extremely difficult) that allow one to prove that they are worthy of becoming a Hashira: the first method is to accumulate a demon kill count of at least 50 as a Kinoe-ranked Demon Slayer, or slay a member of the Twelve Kizuki.[3][4] The second method is being a Tsuguko of a Hashira, which requires immense talent. Additionally, Tsuguko can only inherit the rank, if their respective Hashira dies or retires.
The effort required to achieve either of these methods requires almost five years worth of training, though, the talented might take only two or so years to do so.[3] However, there were one example that was much faster than that; Muichiro Tokito, who managed to rise to the rank of Hashira just two months after joining the Demon Slayer Corps.
All the current hashira are:
Water Hashira: Giyu Tomioka
Love Hashira: Mitsuri Kanroji
Serpent Hashira: Obanai Iguro
Wind Hashira: Sanemi Shinazugawa
Stone Hashira: Gyomei Himejima
Mist Hashira: Muichiro Tokito
Insect Hashira: Shinobu Kocho
Flame Hashira: Kyojuro Rengoku
Flower Hashira: Kanae Kocho
being nine Hashira at the start of the series.[5]
All of the Hashira have Destroyer of Demons (惡あっ鬼き滅めっ殺さつ Akki Messatsu?) engraved on their weapons.
Shinobu has Evil Demon (惡あっ鬼き Akki?) engraved on the right side of the blade, and Destruction (滅めっ殺さつ Messatsu?) engraved on the left side due to her sword’s structure.[6]
Although not fully touched upon, it is hinted that a Hashira can retire whenever they want to.
As the Hashira are a separate group of elite slayers, they have their own symbol on the back of their hand. These symbols correlate to what Breathing Style they are associated with.
Of the nine Taisho era Hashira introduced, only four of them use a standard Nichirin Katana, those four being Kyojuro Rengoku, Giyu Tomioka, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Muichiro Tokito.
The Hashira with the biggest appetite is Mitsuri Kanroji, and the one with the smallest appetite is Obanai Iguro. Obanai can go about three days without eating.
The Hashira are the only people in the Demon Slayer Corps with golden buttons on their uniforms instead of silver.
Demons (鬼おに Oni?) are an ancient race of monstrous and malevolent beings
Demons are a carnivorous, vampire-like species whose primary diet is humans. They are also nocturnal as they are weak to sunlight, though they also stay up during the day as they don’t require sleep.[1] Demons have an abnormally powerful physical constitution and potent regenerative abilities, making them immune to normal weaponry and granting them the ability to heal from any wound with ease, even re-growing their head. Only the Nichirin Swords, weapons made from special ore with sunlight absorption properties, can inflict life-threatening wounds. However, even with a Nichirin Sword, the only method guaranteed to kill a demon is through decapitation. Demons are also known to hate wisteria, which are poisonous to them and whose smell is repudiated by them.
Practically all demons possess a murderous instinct to kill and devour humans, and have lost most of their memories from their human life. While they do still retain their original personality, most times it becomes a darker version of what it used to be, often corrupted by their core beliefs and their past.
Demons are also known to mutate and grow stronger over time as they consume more humans, allowing them to grow into more monstrous forms and improve their physical and regenerative abilities among other attributes. Once demons consume enough humans, they can develop Blood Demon Arts, an array of supernatural powers and techniques which are unique to each demon. Different human blood types have different levels of nutrition for demons: the rarer the blood type, the greater the nutrition. The rarest blood type is known as Marechi; eating a single human with this blood type provides a demon with roughly the same nutrition as eating one hundred ordinary humans.
The Demon Slayer Corps is the central adversary to the demon race. They are an organization trained to destroy them through a multitude of well refined techniques and tools developed across centuries to exterminate them. As a result, demons tend to live in secrecy with the population at large being ignorant to their existence. Even more, some demons blend into human society as a way to hide from persecutors and also to have a much easier access to prey, such as Daki and Muzan himself.
Demons for the most part work in solitude not bothering to group up and are instead shown to be highly territorial and fight over both prey and potential hunting grounds. A notable exception is the Spider Family, a group of demons forced to work together by their leader Rui, with permission to do so granted by Muzan himself.
Demons are all, for the most part, connected to their progenitor, Muzan Kibutsuji. All demons pledge obedience to Muzan, who uses fear and manipulation to maintain loyalty. However, Muzan’s control over his progeny is not omnipotent. An individual with a strong will might be able to sever their connection with Muzan, rendering them immune to his curse and making them mostly undetectable by him.
Indistinguishable: These demons are identical to normal humans at a glance, and mostly resemble their human forms, only with slight, sometimes unnoticeable, alterations to their physiology, including but not limited to: paler skin, pointed nails, strange pupils (that may or may not be due to their demonification).
Humanoid: These demons have humanoid bodies, but with prominent alterations to some aspect of their physiology that make them appear unnerving or noticeably alarming. The majority of lesser demons fall in this category, sharing common physical traits including but not limited to: curved horns, prominent fangs, discolored veins around the forehead, elf-like ears, unnaturally colored sclera, and specialized markings that resemble birthmarks or tattoos that appear somewhere on their bodies.
Inhuman: These demons are heavily mutated and bear little resemblance to humans. Their appearance are akin to beasts, yōkai, and traditional oni. These demons can have mutations that range from multiple appendages, disfigured bodies, and morphed faces. Some demons are more monstrous and animalistic, while some are more abstract and eldritch.
Demons are not born naturally; they are all originally humans who have been transformed into demons later in life. The very first demon, Muzan, underwent an inadvertent transformation when his doctor administered him an experimental medicine containing the primary component of the Blue Spider Lily, in an effort to cure his terminal illness. After becoming a demon, he discovered his enhanced physiology and, while he enjoyed the power that it gave him, he also discovered his vulnerability to sunlight, which caused severe burns upon exposure.[2] Throughout his thousand-year existence, Muzan sought to create more demons, driven by the hope that one of them would undergo a mutation that would grant them the ability to withstand sunlight.[3] This pursuit was not aimed at increasing the overall number of demons, but rather focused on finding the Chosen Demon whom he can absorb to grant him the power to overcome his vulnerability to sunlight.[4][1]
As the progenitor of demons and the source from which nearly all demons originate, Muzan is the only person in the world who possesses blood that has the unique power to transform humans into demons.[5] His cells permeate within all the demons he creates, serving as the foundation of their existence. Consequently, when Muzan is eliminated, all the demons he has spawned will cease to exist.[6]
New demons are created by exposing humans to Muzan’s blood, which triggers a transformative process, provided the individuals can withstand the resulting mutations. It should be noted that this is not a mystical process, but a biological one, performed at a cellular level, which suggests that Muzan’s blood and the Blue Spider Lily medicine have mutagenic properties. There are three primary methods by which demonification is accomplished:
Forceful injection by Muzan: This method involves Muzan personally injecting a controlled amount of his blood into a human, achieved through attacks or by taking advantage of an injured person. The contact of the victim’s open wound with his blood initiates the transformation.
Recruitment by Muzan: This method involves Muzan seeking out vulnerable humans he deems worthy to become a demon and convince them to willingly accept his invitation to become a demon,
Recruitment by an Upper Rank: This method involves the Upper Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki providing their blood to humans they deem strong enough to become a powerful demon.
Due to the alteration of bodies by Muzan’s blood, having a greater quantity of his blood results in increased power. However, the majority of humans are unable to withstand the extreme transformation caused by a large amount of his blood, leading to the destruction of their cells and their bodies disintegrating into ash.[3][18] Consequently, it is challenging for Muzan to find individuals who possess the resilience to withstand a sufficiently high concentration of his blood necessary to transform into an Upper Rank-level demon, though this can be mitigated by giving demons smaller doses of blood over a period of time.
Those who practice Breathing Styles exhibit greater resilience to the transformative effects of Muzan’s blood. As a result, a significantly larger quantity of Muzan’s blood is required and a longer period of time is needed for Breathing users to undergo transformation into demons. For instance, the process of transformation for Kokushibo required an extensive period of three full days to complete.[16] This stands in stark contrast to the relatively quick transformations observed in other demons, such as the Asakusa Demon, which occurred in mere seconds, or Nezuko, whose transformation took several hours. Following this, Muzan lost interest in turning swordsmen who employ Breathing techniques.[19][1] Additionally, there are individuals who possess complete resistance to his blood, although they are exceptionally rare.[16]
In addition to Muzan, Tamayo is also able to create demons, albeit through scientific means rather than blood-sharing. However, this method is far less efficient, as it took her two hundred years to develop and was only put into practice once when she converted Yushiro to save him from a terminal illness.
The first demon that is said to have existed was Muzan Kibutsuji. The one who turned him into a demon was a generous doctor from the Heian Period, who wanted to save Muzan from death since, at the time, he was diagnosed with a disease which would kill him before he turned twenty. Out of frustration and thinking that the treatment would be useless and only cause him more suffering, Muzan killed the doctor before the latter could finish the treatment by letting Muzan consume the final part of his Blue Spider Lily medicine.
Shortly after, Muzan came to realize that the treatment had in fact worked and the effect was just delayed, prolonging his life and strengthening his body. However, it left him with a new, more serious problem; he was unable to walk in sunlight anymore, as doing so would burn him severely, realizing it would even kill him. He soon regretted killing the doctor, now forced to spend the rest of his life avoiding sunlight during the day and having to go out at night.
In order to gain the immunity to sunlight, he needed to complete the medicine made by the doctor, whom he had killed, by find the Blue Spider Lily, believing that if he consumed one, it could nullify his weakness to sunlight. Despite searching far and wide across Japan, he couldn’t find it as he was unaware that it only bloomed during daytime for at most two to three days a year. With the search for the Blue Spider Lily going nowhere, Muzan decided to use his blood to turn people into demons, placing them under his control, hoping that one would either be able to find the Blue Spider Lily, or eventually able to withstand sunlight; once that happened, he could take their immunity to sunlight for himself by consuming them and then finally achieve his goal of conquering the sun and becoming truly immortal.
Demons have: High regeneration, Supernatural strength, Supernatural speed, Supernatural durability, Supernatural senses and powers, Infinite stamina, Menacing aura, Immortality but die to the sun or nichirin blades, Disease immunity, Supernatural blood.
Weaknesses:
Sunlight: The greatest threat to demons is sunlight, which burns their skin, ignites their cells, severely limits their regeneration, and fatally turns them into ashes. Even with his powerful regeneration, Muzan himself is not except from this weakness. As a result, demons could only go out at night or when there’s low sunlight such as rainy, cloudy, and overcast days.
Nichirin Swords: Nichirin Swords are blades composed of a special alloy made of Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore, which has absorbed sunlight to such an extent that a decapitation with such a weapon can instantly kill a demon.[44] There are exceptions, however, as Muzan, Akaza, and Kokushibo overcame this weakness and survived decapitation by these blades. In the case of Daki and Gyutaro, both had to be decapitated before the other reattached their sibling’s head.
Wisteria: Wisteria is a plant that is poisonous to demons, and releases a scent that can repel demons. Extract from the plant can be used to create deadly and highly potent poison to easily kill lesser demons in small amounts, and later contributed to the death of Upper Rank Two Doma, though he had to ingest over 700 times the lethal dosage.
Starvation: A demon needs to eat human flesh (or at least drink human blood) to survive, if not, they will die of starvation.
Curse of Kibutsuji: Every demon that assimilated Muzan’s blood is also inflicted with a curse which activates if they call out divulge any information about him, even something as minor as his last name. When activated, their regeneration will cease and the cells belonging to Muzan inside the demon will kill them.
Because of this, many demons regard Muzan with great fear and respect, simply referring to him as “that Man” or “Him” in order to prevent the curse from being activated, while demons within the Twelve Kizuki refer to him as “Lord” or “Master”.
