Description:

Kurtis is a recurring character in the Disgaea series. Story: Another human from Earth, Kurtis works under General Carter and the Earth Defense Force like Captain Gordon. However, he views himself as more worthy of the title of Defender of Earth than Gordon. Although it may be coincidence, he has facial features in common with Don Joaquin, the original Defender of Earth, suggesting a sort of ancestral pride that may fuel his desire to be the defender. Near the end of the game, Kurtis sacrifices himself to save Jennifer, being proclaimed by Gordon as the "38th Defender of Earth" and his soul is sent to "his family's side" in Heaven by Death on behalf of Laharl's orders. Despite that, he is made into a prinny to atone for his sins, joining Laharl's party in Celestia later in the final episode of the game. Abilities: Cyborg body: After being caught in an explosion, Kurtis had to have 70% of his body operated on and replaced with robotic parts to survive, these robotic parts give Kurtis a variety of abilities. It is unclear what is left of Kurtis is still human. Superhuman strength, speed and durability: Due to being a cyborg, Kurtis' strength, speed and durability were enhanced dramatically to the point that Kurtis is able to fight on par with powerful demons like Overlord Laharl. Invisibility: Kurtis has an invisibility device built into his body, allowing him to almost completely mask his presence in a given area. Teleportation: Kurtis has a teleportation device built into his body, allowing him to suddenly appear and disappear whenever he wants. Flight: Kurtis has the ability to fly through the air with ease thanks to the rocket thrusters built into his feet. Rocket fist: Kurtis is able to shoot off his fists as projectiles which explode after a few seconds. Kurtis is able to instantly replace his robotic arms, allowing him to fire a barrage of them in a few seconds. Nuclear blasts: Kurtis is able to shoot out incredibly potent nuclear blasts at his opponent from his fingers. Backstory: Kurtis was originally a scientist on Earth who worked with the Earth Defence Force until one day, an anti-space development terrorist group would attack the lab that Kurtis and his family were at, causing an explosion to happen, killing Kurtis' wife and child as well as leaving Kurtis' body badly scarred, requiring him to receive cyborg enhancements in order to survive. After this event, Kurtis began to blame Captain Gordon, the Defender of Earth for not being able to stop the terrorist attack, seeing him as a failure of a hero. Kurtis would then decides that he must become the Defender of Earth in Gordon's place and began to start calling himself by said title as he secretly took missions from Gordon, allowing him to save the Earth on more than one occasion. Kurtis would join the Earth Defence Force on their invasion of the Netherworld. He would fight against Overlord Laharl, his friends and the Defenders of Earth. After losing the fight, Kurtis would go ahead to retrieve Jennifer under General Carter's orders and bring her to the battleship Gargantua where he would place a mind control device on Jennifer. While on the Gargantua, Kurtis would run into Laharl and Captain Gordon who invaded the ship looking for Jennifer, they would battle again and Kurtis would lose and sit down in the hall that he was defeated in. Kurtis would begin to regret his action and opinion of Captain Gordon and would turn against General Carter. Carter would use Jennifer against Kurtis who would overload his body to break Jennifer's mind control device, freeing her but resulting in Kurtis' death, his last moments being spent with Captain Gordon, asking if he became a true Defender of Earth. After dying, Kurtis would be sent to Celestia by Laharl, however, his sins made it so he became a Prinny. He would reunite with Laharl and the Defenders of Earth, agreeing to battle against the Angels to save the Netherworld. Trivia: Kurtis in his human form shows a resemblance to Jet Link AKA 002 from the 1960s manga Cyborg 009. This is due to Kurtis being a Cyborg, having a pointy nose and a similar hair style to Jet. On top of that, both Jet Link and Kurtis have rocket boosters in their feet, allowing them to fly. On the subject of Cyborg 009, the reward from the first Kurtis Map in Disgaea 2, the Accelerator, is in itself a reference to the manga as it is classified as a "Tooth" item and the character Cyborg 009 has a switch to that activates his "Speed Accelerator" in his teeth. Continuing on the subject, his Magichange gun Skill 'Accelerate' is a reference the function of the Accelerator embedded in Joe Shimamura's tooth. Kurtis has his own theme song that plays in the 3 games in the various scenes that focus on him. It is called Battle Comrade. When called in Disgaea 2 via Cell Phone, Battle Comrade will replace the song that was playing before. His name is misspelled as Curtis on the Playstation Network's listing for any DLC that involves him. Kurtis appears in his Prinny form along with the entire Prism Ranger Force in Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?, while battling Flonne in her DLC mission. She summons them for a game of football which the Hero Prinny must avoid, with a final flying kick from Kurtis which causes the explosive ball to rebound all over the screen. In Disgaea 4, even though he does not have the Prinny's Explosive Nature Evility that causes them to explode upon being thrown, he will still explode which effectively gives him up to 4 evilities.
